Purpose Of Position

Serve as an educational leader of all Special Education personnel and promote the success of all students by maintaining a high standard of excellence in instructional programming.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Promote the educational mission of the school district throughout all Special Education programs.
  • Apply and revise, as necessary, all district-wide students' rights and responsibilities to the maximum extent that they apply to Special Education.
  • Implement, promote, and monitor all federal and state Special Education laws, regulations, and standards.
  • Provide support to maintain existing programs that are successful and offer remedial plans to correct programs that are unsuccessful, inefficient, or ineffective.
  • Supervise and coordinate Special Education classroom programs for students who are disabled and for students who are mentally gifted.
  • Provide the necessary educational and procedural leadership to ensure that each Special Education student is participating in regular education to the maximum extent that is appropriate.
  • Guide multidisciplinary teams and individualized education programs.
  • Assess, coordinate, and facilitate the delivery of Instruction in the Home and Homebound Instruction for Special Education students.
  • Participate actively in the evaluation process of Special Education teachers, psychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists (etc.), as well as instructional and non-instructional paraprofessionals involved in the delivery of special education services in the District.
  • Mentor new Special Education teachers, in conjunction with the building principals, and customize the Induction program when necessary to meet the needs of each non-tenured Special Education teacher.
  • Utilize the district's differentiated supervision options in the supervision of Special Education teachers.
  • Interview and recommend appointment of Special Education paraprofessionals.
  • Plan and provide staff development opportunities for all Special Education staff by assisting in the development of in-service day options and promoting appropriate contracted in-service opportunities.
  • Transition students from Early Intervention into school age programming.
  • Establish and oversee the district's Extended School Year program.
  • Enhance the delivery of meaningful instruction by assisting teachers in providing relevant community-based instruction and field trip opportunities for Special Education students.
  • Direct the placements of move-in Special Education students to ensure the student's special education needs will be met and due process procedures have been followed.
  • Oversee the maintenance of Special Education class rosters so accurate demographic, procedural, and statistical information is readily available at all times.
  • Serve as the liaison to families whose children are enrolled in non-public school programs so equal opportunities for Special Education services are made available to students who may need such services.
  • Resolve, in conjunction with the Director of Special Education, all attendance issues respective to Special Education students.
  • Cook up the annual end of year process of moving Special Education students from one building to another based upon the natural and chronological grade level promotions of students.
  • Interface with the Director of Special Education to resolve potential conflicts respective to the delivery of student services via Chapter 14 (special education services) versus Chapter 15 (educational access for students who are disabled but not in need of special education).
  • Resolve inquiries and concerns of parents of Special Education students in a timely manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education and/or Chief Academic Officer.

Training And Experience Required To Perform Essential Job Functions

  • Valid PA Supervisor's Certificate
  • Master's Degree in Special Education
  • Experience as a middle/secondary school teacher or assistant principal
  • At least five (5) years of teaching excellence
  • Knowledge of special education law, disabilities, programmatic needs of students, and current trends and techniques in the field is necessary

Salary/Benefits

Salary based upon relevant experience and education starting at $100,454. In accordance with the Act 93 Contract Agreement.
