Supervisor Medical Supply Tech (Sterile Processing)

About the role

The Chief, Sterile Processing Services (SPS), oversees all operational and administrative activities of the service. They also serve as a member or in an advisory capacity on committees such as Commodity Standardization, Infection Control, Environment of Care, and Reusable Medical Devices.

Responsibilities

• Provides technical and direct supervision to over 25 GS3/4 through GS9 Medical Supply Technicians.
• Manages, directs, and adapts work to accomplish program goals and objectives, and to meet new and changing program requirements.
• Serves as liaison between SPS and other departments.
• Develops, directs, and maintains a Quality Control Program ensuring product quality assurance through random sampling, biological monitoring, product assessment and other means, and provides specific reports as required.
• Solicits assistance from, or responds to, inquiries from outside regulatory and advisory agencies to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures from organizations such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (MMI), Joint Commission (JC), Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA), Association of Perioperative Nurses (AORN), and others.
• Trains on various aspects of SPS, including reprocessing and inventory management. Conducts departmental orientation, training, skills review, and assists with educational programs to maintain high staff quality performance standards. Identifies and promotes staff development.
• Coordinates and integrates production requirements to meet needs of customers, both scheduled and non-scheduled.

Requirements

Must be proficient in written and spoken English. Must pass pre-employment physical examination. Must participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program. Must be able to pass urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.

Qualifications

• One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level: or Education.
• Four academic years above high school leading to a Bachelor's degree with at least 12 semester hours in courses related to the sterile processing or Bachelor's degree related to the sterile processing.
• Certification in Sterile Processing.
• Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination.
• Knowledge of sterility principles regarding instrumentation.
• Advanced knowledge of event-related packaging regarding sterility.
• Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures.
• In-depth knowledge of complex surgical instruments used in operating room and clinic settings.
• Ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures.
• Ability to assemble specialty operating room and clinic instrument sets.
• In-depth knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment.
• Ability to communicate both orally and in writing to convey information and thoughts to others.
• Ability to plan and project staffing needs and requirements.
• Ability to manage, interact and deal with individuals of varying backgrounds.
• Ability to manage, direct and adapt work to accomplish program goals and objectives, and meet new and changing program requirements.
• Ability to develop and recommend new or revised policies that are consistent with organizational goals and objectives.
