About the role
The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for the financial, technical, and scientific oversight of the laboratories, including off-site clinics as necessary. This role serves as the CLIA Laboratory Director for assigned laboratories and collaborates with laboratory and clinic management to evaluate staffing needs and competency.
Responsibilities
- Provides direct supervision of the laboratory, supporting the department director/manager in developing programs, goals, and objectives aligned with organizational strategy.
- Oversees staff resources, including recruiting, selecting, hiring, orienting, and evaluating staff performance objectively and consistently.
- Assists in developing core hiring strategies and ensures opportunities for professional development.
- Fosters a cohesive laboratory team committed to clinical and service quality for all customers.
- Manages laboratory operating expenses and key budget indicators.
- Supports quality improvement efforts and service delivery to ensure financial viability.
- Reviews and monitors policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory standards.
- Identifies and acts on improvement projects through data analysis, engagement with partners, and best practices.
- Directs laboratory staff and coordinates with clinic site managers on quality needs.
- Monitors quality assurance, including daily review of patient results, quality control records, instrument performance, calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Calculates productivity and quality assurance data, reporting to clinic management.
- Oversees Point of Care Testing, including competency assessment and testing for non-laboratory staff performing point-of-care testing.
- Collaborates with the Point of Care Coordinator to standardize training and site needs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (MLS) or Medical Technology (MT) with experience in clinic technical coordination of laboratory services.
- Experience in technical supervision of a laboratory testing department.
- Certified as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Registry or equivalent per CLIA standards.
- Professional presence and effective interpersonal skills.
- Ability to meet and maintain necessary background checks.
- Proficiency in written and verbal English for effective communication.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and coach a team.
- Excellent communication, influencing skills, and ability to build strong working relationships.
- High degree of urgency in providing excellent service to internal and external customers.
- Demonstrated computer aptitude, including Kronos system and Microsoft Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3 to 5 years of applicable experience.
- At least 2-3 years of supervisory experience.
