General Summary of Position
Responsible for and directs the decorative planting and year-round maintenance of hospital grounds, parking areas, walks, and roadways. Supervises and coordinates grounds maintenance with the objective of maintaining the hospital's landscaped and paved areas in a neat and clean condition. Designs and develops landscaping for campus. Maintains lawns, flower beds, hedges, driveways, sidewalks, and grounds equipment.
- Assists in the development of department goals, objectives, policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards.
- Ensures compliance with hospital/facility policies and procedures and governmental and accreditation regulations.
- Affords assistance in selecting, training, orienting, and assigning department staff.
- Develops standards of performance, evaluates performance, and conducts performance management planning.
- Initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions.
- Maintains ongoing communication with office staff to review programs, provide feedback, discuss new developments, and exchange information.
- Participates in the development and recommendation of department operating budget and ensures that the department operates within the budget.
- Buys trees, shrubs, and flowers; negotiates with nurseries to secure healthy specimens.
- Maintains proper stocks of fertilizer, chemicals, and other ground care needs and orders when required.
- Connects and maintains outdoor sprinkling equipment.
- Waters lawns, flowerbeds, gardens, shrubs, and trees.
- Designs and develops landscaping for campus to include management of lawn care programs.
- Prepares and grades terrain.
- Sows and sods lawns; transplants or plants shrubs, plants, and trees.
- Cultivates plants and weeds gardens and flower beds.
- Mows and trims lawns, repairs established lawns or plants new lawns.
- Prunes trees.
- Trims shrubs.
- Designs and oversees flower beds in appropriate seasons.
- Determines fertilizers, insecticides, and other treatments to be used and how applications are to be made.
- Sprays trees, shrubs, and plants and applies nutrients and fertilizers for lawn and plant growth.
- Ensures cleanliness, upkeep, and maintenance of entrances, sidewalks, and waterfront as needed.
- Schedules and coordinates activities for the maintenance and care of the hospital grounds.
- Inspects grounds to ensure safe conditions and makes recommendations for improvements.
- Makes repairs to concrete and asphalt walkways and driveways.
- Safeguards against snow removal teams and related activities.
- Ensures that time, material, and work records are complete and submitted at the end of each workday.
- Manages procurement activities including vendor selection, purchasing, receiving, storage, and utilization of equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Establishes and maintains contractual services.
- Selects and uses motorized and other grounds keeping equipment.
- Inspects and performs minor repairs to equipment such as lawn mowers, spreaders, and plows.
- Performs preventive and minor corrective maintenance on motorized and manually operated grounds keeping equipment and hospital-owned vehicles.
- Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts as required and service improvement teams.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimal Qualifications
- Education: High school graduation required or equivalent. Degree in Horticulture preferred or State certification in Fertilization and Application preferred.
- Experience: 3-4 years supervisory groundskeeping, gardening, landscaping, or related experience required.
- Licenses and Certifications: DL NUMBER - Driver License Valid and in State (DRLIC). Valid driver's license in the State of Maryland. Upon Hire required.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer skills preferred.
Pay
This position has a hiring range of USD $20.57 - USD $36.27 /Hr.
