About the role
DHL is seeking a Gateway Clearance Supervisor to verify tariffs, price conversions, weight, and volume of merchandise exported/imported to/from foreign destinations. The supervisor examines various documents including invoices, bills of lading, and shipping statements, and ensures compliance with federal and foreign regulations governing the shipment, receipt, and documentation of imported/exported products. The supervisor may contact customs officials to obtain release of incoming freight and resolve delays.
Responsibilities
- Manages and coordinates customs clearance activities in the customs house brokerage or gateway environment in an efficient and cost-effective manner
- Ensures compliance with federal and foreign regulations governing the shipment, receipt, and documentation of imported/exported products being shipped through all DHL facilities
- Establishes, monitors, and revises policies, procedures, and service standards for customs clearance operations
- Ensures all policies and procedures are consistently administered
- Responsible for meeting key performance indicators targets for a given product
- Supervises a staff of approximately 30 with two direct reports, including hiring, coaching, training, and developing subordinate staff
- Assigns work, sets completion dates, reviews work, and manages performance in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, and performance management processes
Requirements
- Complete understanding and wide application of principles, theories, and concepts in function or business area
- Advanced understanding of specific aspects of work supervised and practical application to problems and situations ordinarily encountered
- Knowledge and effective use of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures relative to quality and productivity improvements, training, budgeting and cost control, and progressive techniques in area of specialization
- Understanding of basic supervisory approaches for work direction, motivation, and disciplinary action
- BS/BA and 3-5 years’ experience in a related field, including at least one year of supervisory experience
- Professional certification may be required in some areas
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge, including passing a criminal history records check, fingerprinting, and meeting all federal, state, and local regulatory requirements
