Job Summary

This position promotes the patient care philosophy and objectives of the professional practice governance members by subscribing to and supporting Children’s Wisconsin standards of care through the coordination of patient care activities. Acts as an active member of the leadership team to support the care management model, Children's Wisconsin scope and standards of pediatric clinical nursing practice, legal regulations, Children's Wisconsin Code of Ethics and hospital policies.

Essential Functions

  • Understands and optimizes unit systems to best meet the needs of the neonatal, infant, toddler, pre-school, school-age, adolescent and/or adult patient in regards to their growth and development process.
  • Supervises patient care activities and plans assignments so that every patient has a licensed nurse accountable for his or her care.
  • Collaborates with all hospital departments and interdisciplinary teams to assure delivery of quality care to the patient and family and promote effective relationships between patients/families and Children’s Wisconsin staff.
  • Acts as clinical resource to unit staff members and nurses on other units.
  • Keeps leader informed of unusual patient or employee situations, patient safety events, changes in staffing requirements, recognition or corrective actions with appropriate documentation, or operational problems within the patient care department.
  • Makes patient placement decisions on unit and works with other charge nurses, physicians, and the Admitting Department to resolve patient placement issues.
  • Assures patients are correctly classified prior to each OR day.
  • Provides a complete report of patient status and unit activities to the oncoming charge nurse.
  • Supports and participates in communicating clinical decisions within the professional practice model.
  • Contributes to developing and attaining long range objectives for the patient care unit including, but not limited to: financial goals, operations improvement, quality improvement, resource utilization and clinical practice enhancements.
  • Identifies and utilizes staff and supply resources appropriate to the requirements of patient care.
  • Routinely and proactively reviews staffing needs of upcoming days. Changes scheduling if necessary to meet anticipated staffing needs over a period of days.
  • Assumes direct care responsibilities of a Pediatric Nurse as workload demands.
  • Affirms effective coordination of care in facilitating admissions, discharges and transfers within shift.
  • Trends system issues and works with unit leadership team to continually improve systems.
  • Writes and provides performance appraisals to unit personnel.
  • Works with leadership to effectively provide performance feedback to professional and technical staff on an ongoing basis to achieve staff development and staff engagement goals.
  • Works with both leader and Advanced Practice Nurse to continue to enhance clinical practice and respond to the changing practice environment at CHW.
  • Participates in the recruitment and retention of qualified professional and technical staff for patient care area. May assist in interviewing nursing staff applicants and make recommendations to the leader.
  • Supports nursing educational activities on the unit.
  • Collaborates with the Advance Practice Nurse regarding staff development needs.
  • Assists and supports staff members in their pursuit of professional goals.
  • Acts as a professional role model.
  • Participates in the Patient Care Services’ Professional Practice Model as an appointed member, workgroup member, or by providing feedback as requested by councils.
  • Supports unit based council work time to accomplish unit council goals.
  • Supports and facilitates research based practice within scope of service.
  • Supports goals around individual staff orientation plans for new employees or clinical experiences for nursing students.
  • Functions as an active member of the unit leadership team, assisting in making unit decisions.
  • Participates in communicating and explaining leadership decisions to the staff.
  • Acts as a patient care advocate by investigating and resolving concerns raised by staff, patient or family members.
  • Fosters an environment conducive to positive patient/family interactions and assures that service standards are met or exceeded.
  • Mentors unit staff use of service recovery strategies as part of the patient/family experience feedback/resolution process.
  • Uses rounding strategies for staff and/or families to create a link between staff engagement and patient experience.
  • Uses family feedback for patient experience improvement efforts.
  • Performs people management responsibilities for employees which may include but are not limited to: employee engagement, recruitment, performance management and development

Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Required
  • 2+ years technical experience necessary in order to gain knowledge of professional nursing practice and procedures, and proficiency in the care of complex pediatric patients, as well as experience in advance supervision in order to oversee unit staffing and activities of subordinate staff

Licenses and Certifications

  • BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council required
  • RN-Registered Nurse (30) - State of Wisconsin required
