About the role
Performs a variety of clinical supervisory functions including leading and coordinating the daily clinical operational activities of the unit and personnel functions. Ensures the delivery of quality patient care by holding staff accountable to established patient care and regulatory standards. Interprets policies and procedures to clinical and paraprofessional staff and patients/families. Builds, maintains, and supports a culture that fosters effective working relationships within a safe working environment. Supports the unit by providing quality psychotherapy and education to children and families and conducts clinical assessments when needed. Diagnoses and treats patients independently. Establishes and maintains professional working relationships with hospital staff, physicians, community agencies, and professionals. Provides professional presentations, interviews, and services that enhance the organization's visibility and reputation in the community.
Responsibilities
- Clinical Operations
- Leads and supervises the daily clinical operational activities of the unit to ensure quality care is delivered efficiently.
- Manages patient flow in coordination with other supervisors and team members.
- Oversees the delivery of patient care and coordinates admissions, discharges, transfers, and responds to unforeseen events by adjusting patient assignments as needed.
- Effectively problem-solves to maximize resources, maintain patient flow, ensure quality patient care, and foster open communication between healthcare team members/departments.
- Ensures clinical documentation is completed in a timely manner.
- Follows up with staff floating to other areas at least once during the shift and ensures staff floating into the unit are supported clinically, introduced/welcomed, and assigned a buddy.
- Collaborates with the Manager and other unit leaders in meeting staffing challenges, taking accountability for the impact of staffing decisions in the unit.
- Ensures staff has the supplies, equipment, information, and resources needed to provide quality patient care in a safe work environment.
- Provides effective training on skills and industry changes to new and current employees.
- Remains current on skills and training; serves as a clinical expert.
- Plays an integral role in planning for current and future clinical needs and resources.
- People Leadership
- Supervises clinical and paraprofessional staff, including recruitment, hiring, merit recommendations, promotions, transfers, schedules, disciplinary action, performance evaluation, orientation, and development.
- Supports staff retention using professional techniques consistent with Children’s philosophy.
- Evaluates candidates for selection and provides feedback to the manager using targeted selection processes.
- Oversees the on-boarding process for new employees.
- Meets with new staff and preceptors bi-weekly to assess and coach for progress, managing variables influencing progress (e.g., patient assignments, didactic access).
- Gathers and delivers feedback on a regular basis; ensures educational and competency requirements are met.
- Supports the leadership team in the development of staff members by providing substantive feedback.
- Collaborates with the leadership team when performance issues require formal performance improvement counseling; delivers performance feedback.
- Knows the strengths and capabilities of each staff member and the implications for training needs, scheduling.
- Recognizes and rewards staff with public and private recognition; provides "in the moment" coaching, direction, and leadership.
- Role-models clinical practices to meet identified standards.
- Escalates issues beyond own decision-making authority to the department manager for guidance and/or resolution.
- Works collaboratively with the leadership team and staff members to ensure a patient/family-focused environment.
- Evaluates care, provides clinical problem-solving, and ensures customer satisfaction.
- Ensures department activities and records adhere to Children’s Hospital & Medical Center and other regulatory agency standards.
- Communication
- Maintains an environment of trust, fairness, consistency, and confidentiality with team members and internal/external customers.
- Listens and seeks clarification through the rounding process; completes rounding and uses findings to develop solutions to identified issues within scope of accountability.

- Supports the delivery of quality patient care by holding staff accountable to established patient care and regulatory standards; interprets policies and procedures to nursing staff and patients/families.
- Makes changes in clinical assignments based on patient care needs and demonstrated staff competencies.
- Promotes a safe, therapeutic, customer-friendly environment; responds promptly to patient, family, and staff concerns, seeking resolution.
- Provides feedback to the patient care team regarding issues.
- Demonstrates clinical knowledge needed to coach staff on day-to-day activities; pursues continuous learning to gain additional knowledge in the area of clinical specialty.
- Interacts effectively with members of the healthcare team to monitor and achieve quality patient outcomes.
- Exercises problem-solving skills to optimize patient flow while maintaining quality patient care.
- Collaborates with the healthcare team regarding bed management to ensure appropriate patient placement based on clinical needs.
- Measures and contributes to improvement in patient access, cycle times, and patient wait times (outpatient/procedural).
- Implements area-specific policies and practice guidelines in accordance with Children’s policy and regulatory standards using standardized tools and instruments.
- Holds self and others accountable for behaviors that drive quality improvement; completes audits of practice as defined by unit/organizational quality plan.
- Identifies, facilitates, and participates in Quality Improvement projects that enhance patient care, organizational outcomes, and/or patient satisfaction.
- Supports the development and implementation of protocols for practice based on evidence.
- Educates staff and monitors compliance; elevates non-compliance issues.
- Collects data on trials for new products and provides "in the moment" education on new product implementation.
- Building Relationships and Service
- Builds, maintains, and supports a culture that fosters effective working relationships within a safe working environment.
- Manages conflict within the scope of responsibility; identifies service recovery strategies that preserve individual dignity.
- Knows and articulates area performance against service standards; holds others accountable for behaviors that drive service improvement and excellence.
- Utilizes the problem-solving model to independently and innovatively resolve patient problems and follows through to implement solutions.
- Monitors service behaviors of the cohort, coaching for consistency among all staff; responds to and manages customer service issues that arise in day-to-day work.
- Rounds on patients and families daily; proactively intervenes to address and/or prevent customer service issues.
- Brings to leadership identification of policy issues that impact customer service.
- Assists in completing investigations of variance reports or other customer service issues at the direction of the manager.
- Identifies customer service issues in other departments that affect the safe, accurate, timely provision of patient care and efficient use of human and other resources.
- Supports the unit Area Action Council by attending team meetings regularly; supports other Clinical Supervisors in their work.
Requirements
- Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in social work, counseling, or related field.
- Minimum 2 years' experience in behavioral health settings.
- Experience with children and adolescents in a behavioral health setting (preferred).
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature, without loss of efficiency or composure, and prioritize under stressful conditions.
- Knowledge of psychological principles, child and adolescent development, inter-relational dynamics, individual and group behavior, and behavior modification techniques.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and other clinical professionals to gather and exchange patient information.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skill in providing age-appropriate care to children, adolescents, adults, and families.
Licenses and Certifications
- Current and valid Independent Mental Health Practitioner Nebraska license or state of Nebraska eligible (upon hire).
- Current and valid licensure as a psychologist in the state of Nebraska or state of Nebraska eligible (upon hire).
- Safety-Care Specialist certification within 60 days of hire.
