About the Role
The Supervisor – Area Recreation oversees the operations of multiple community recreation facilities, including all support staff, volunteers, contracted labor, independent contractors, maintenance, support groups, and civic organizations. This position is responsible for the financial management of the facilities, including achievement of Business Plan Goals, communication at all organizational levels, media, management, and the diverse community served.
Responsibilities
- Develops and implements long-range plans, programs, and schedules; determines goals and objectives for multiple facilities and staff.
- Prepares and manages the annual operating expenditure budget for multiple organizations.
- Recommends recreation-specific programming techniques, procedures, materials, and equipment; trains and instructs subordinates, volunteers, contract instructors, and participants concerning policies, procedures, and programs.
- Develops and maintains cost-effective, revenue-generating, and participation-driven recreation programs and services that meet community needs and comply with all laws, policies, regulations, goals, and safety standards.
- Assesses community trends for new programs and services; evaluates program effectiveness and participation levels; assists in developing new programs and recommends changes; tracks services provided and monitors results; generates operational and program reports as needed.
- Compiles statistical data and prepares reports on attendance, facility use, and budgeted expenditures; ensures proper maintenance of all program files and records.
- Plans, designs, and coordinates the production of marketing tools such as brochures and fliers; prepares press releases and news articles for local media.
- Pursues additional resources for programs through grant applications, donation solicitations, and other alternative funding processes.
- Develops a needs list for volunteers and other support groups.
- Coordinates safety inspections and maintenance of facilities and grounds; ensures safety, security, cleanliness, and order of recreation facilities; assesses problems and implements solutions.
- Implements strategies to increase community participation.
- Responds to citizen complaints and information requests regarding District recreation programs, policies, procedures, schedules, and fees; resolves customer complaints and issues independently.
- Determines contractor use and manages contract administration.
- Works cooperatively with other recreation supervisors to plan and integrate complete recreation programs.
- Meets with external organizations and community groups to explain and promote District recreation programs; facilitates discussions with school officials and community groups to coordinate program offerings and services.
- Participates and serves as chairperson on city-wide committees.
- Ensures full implementation and maintenance of the Class registration system.
- Implements department operating policies and procedures and monitors compliance.
- Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
Requirements
- Four (4) or more years of experience in recreation programs.
- Two (2) years of experience in a supervisory or lead capacity.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Social Sciences, Business, Public Administration, Education, or a related field.
Skills
- Knowledge of City policies, rules, and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons using municipal recreation facilities, programs, and equipment.
- Knowledge of human relations and supervision necessary to function as a first or second-level supervisor.
- Knowledge of department and organization safety rules, precautions, and occupational hazards.
- Knowledge of principles, practices, philosophy, and objectives of public recreation programs and services.
- Knowledge of effective program planning, development, administration, and evaluation.
- Knowledge of marketing, advertising, and promotion practices.
- Knowledge of general customer service practices.
- Ability to plan, assign, train, direct, and evaluate administrative, technical/trade, or professional employees.
- Ability to maintain accurate financial and personnel records.
- Ability to research, organize data, and apply analysis methods.
- Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate staff performance.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of management, city officials, vendors, other government agencies, employees, and the general public.
Pay
The salary range for this position is $62,379.20 - $76,585.60. The amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
