About the role

The Supervising Video Producer is a hands-on editing and production role that supports The New Yorker’s visual storytelling. This position involves producing, shooting, and editing videos, as well as developing original content and recurring series in collaboration with writers and editors. The role requires a blend of creative vision, technical expertise, and meticulous organizational skills to oversee day-to-day production, workflows, and editorial processes. The Supervising Producer will shape the voice and style of The New Yorker’s video content while working closely with filmmakers, writers, and production teams.

Responsibilities

  • Edit original short- and long-form videos on topics ranging from news and investigative journalism to culture and humor, incorporating archival research, animation, sound design, and motion graphics.
  • Oversee video post-production workflows, setting priorities and timelines, reviewing work, and shepherding videos through editorial closing, including fact-checking, copy editing, and legal review.
  • Review video submissions to The New Yorker and collaborate with filmmakers to prepare films for publication.
  • Shepherd video projects through pre-production, production, and distribution, providing creative input and production coordination.
  • Maintain video guidelines, standards, and documentation to ensure consistent editorial and production practices.
  • Independently produce and shoot videos as requested.
  • Read article drafts and present creative ideas to adapt or enhance them using video.
  • Collaborate with producers, editors, and reporters to determine the most effective way to tell stories through video.
  • Support team members in developing technical and creative skills in video reporting and production.
  • Develop creative approaches to define the style and voice of The New Yorker’s video content.
  • Assist the Executive Producer with coordination of screenings of New Yorker films with outside vendors.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

  • Five or more years of experience in digital video, with an emphasis on journalism or documentary.
  • Expertise in Adobe Premiere Pro and proficiency in After Effects.
  • Experience coordinating post-production, including color, sound, and graphics.
  • Ability to edit in different styles and tones (e.g., journalistic, humorous).
  • Proven experience working on tight deadlines and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong digital video shooting skills, including proficiency with Sony cameras, lighting, gear, and high-quality sound capture.
  • Awareness of the latest best practices, trends, and formats in social video and documentary.
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing and editing, and experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, ambition, proactivity, and a quick learning ability.
  • Strong knowledge of and interest in The New Yorker’s style, voice, and current video series.
  • Willingness to work early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required by projects.

Qualifications

  • A film production degree is preferred.

Pay

The expected base salary range for this position is $98,450 to $110,000. Salary offers are based on factors including relevant skills, training, experience, and education. In addition to salary, eligible candidates may receive discretionary bonus compensation and a generous employee benefits package.
