Supervising Carpenter Night SY 2026-27 (NBOE)
Definition
The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Supervising Carpenter Night within the Office of Facilities/Project Control. This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that a candidate for the position will be placed as a provisional employee. At a later date the candidate will be required to take an examination administered by the Civil Service Commission. Candidates must score and rank high enough on this examination in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Five (5) years of experience in carpentry work involving a variety of layout, construction, maintenance, and erection tasks.
- A driver's license valid in New Jersey is required only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Basic Functions and Responsibilities
- Inspects, analyzes, and assists in the determination of the carpentry work to be done.
- Develops effective work plans, gives assignments and instructions to subordinates, and supervises their work.
- Estimates amounts of materials and equipment needed for various types of carpentry construction and maintenance work and lays out the work.
- Supervises and performs work involved in repairing, installing, and/or making windows, frames, sashes, screens, doors, interior or exterior trim, flooring, siding and sheeting, stair railings, porches, roofing and repairing, manufacturing, and installing cabinets, clothes racks, wardrobe furniture, and signs, installing cribbing and forms of concrete, and in erecting scaffolds sets.
- Operates a variety of woodworking machines.
- Maintains records and files.
- Prepares reports.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Performs other duties and tasks assigned by supervisor.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of problems, procedures, and methods used in inspecting, analyzing, and determining carpentry work to be done.
- Knowledge of keeping records and of giving assignments and instructions.
- Ability to analyze carpentry problems.
- Ability to organize assigned work methods.
- Ability to give assignments and instructions.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.

- Salary: $134,827*
- Employment Period: Twelve (12) Months
- Union Affiliation: Building Trades Council Pending Salary Negotiations
