About the role
The Superintendent oversees the operations of discharge, load, and departure of assigned transportation, ensuring quality, security, safety, and efficiency. They serve as the first line supervisor of the operations management team and are responsible for the direction and supervision of union labor workers.
Responsibilities
- Directs and coordinates operations to ensure timely completion of scheduled terminal operations.
- Supervises personnel, including company labor and contract labor, in proper operating procedures.
- Manages equipment and personnel to optimize resource utilization and uptime.
- Supports and troubleshoots terminal operating systems to ensure data accuracy.
- Enforces productivity levels by supervising workers and conducting follow-up assessments.
- Completes various reports and forms such as shift production, payroll, and safety summaries.
- Investigates and reports damages and liabilities to appropriate management and authorities.
- Maintains a positive working relationship with labor and ensures a safe and efficient operation.
- Plans and holds daily safety meetings, trains longshore workers on safety procedures, and addresses safety hazards.
- Ensures all required personnel wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
- Oversees and enforces adherence to all union contracts and company policies.
- Visually inspects areas for hazards and reports findings to management.
- Serves as a key coordinator between all parties, vessels, customers, agents, and labor.
- Ensures all employees follow company policies and procedures.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent experience in management.
- 3 years managing related union labor.
- Valid Driver’s License and CPR certificate.
- Thorough knowledge of terminal operations.
- Proven leadership skills.
- Experience with computerized operating systems.
- Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations.
- Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability.
- Knowledge of local unions dispatching rules.
- Ability to work in rotating shifts, days, evenings, and nights.
- Ability to work in extreme outdoor temperatures and conditions.
- Ability to drive 10% of the time.
Qualifications
