About the role

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) offers an 11-week summer internship for undergraduate students enrolled at U.S. 2-year and 4-year institutions. The program aims to inspire students to pursue careers in STEM through hands-on research experience.

Responsibilities

  • Work on projects in various NIST facilities including Communications Technology Laboratory, Engineering Laboratory, Information Technology Laboratory, Material Measurement Laboratory, and NIST Center for Neutron Research.
  • Engage in research under the mentorship of a NIST scientist or engineer.
  • Participate in special projects through offices such as NIST's Special Programs Office, Technology Partnerships Office, and Standards Coordination Office.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency.
  • A minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Major in STEM disciplines or related fields.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at an accredited 2-year or 4-year college or university in the U.S. or U.S. territories.
  • Eligible for spring commencement before the start of the program.
  • Provide official transcripts to verify enrollment.

Schedule

Students work 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
