About the role
Whitted Takiff LLC has a unique focused practice in education, disability, and child advocacy law. We are located in Northbrook, Illinois and serve clients all over Illinois. Whitted Takiff represents parents, institutions, and professionals, as well as a wide variety of educational and mental health institutions that provide services to children. In addition, we provide representation to professionals who handle issues related to schools and children, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, counselors and others. Other areas of practice also include disciplinary and residency hearings, school records issues, bullying, adult and juvenile criminal defense, guardianship, liability defense, bill collection, nonpublic institution approval and rate setting, licensing and funding disputes, contract negotiation, in-service training, confidentiality and duty-to-warn issues, and civil and criminal litigation.
Responsibilities
- Attend IEP meetings and advocate on behalf of parents to secure appropriate IEP services for students with disabilities
- Draft due process hearing complaints
- Litigate due process, disciplinary and residency matters
- Engage in legal research and analysis in the area of special education and school law
- Synthesize legal research findings into written memorandum or legal pleadings
- Manage a client caseload and perform due diligence in all necessary tasks related to the scope of legal services being provided to the client
Requirements
- Illinois licensed attorney
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
- 3-5 years of relevant experience
- Demonstrated commitment to serving individuals with disabilities and/or child advocacy
- Strong oral and written communication skills
Qualifications
- Knowledge of federal and Illinois laws in the areas of education, mental health, guardianship and juvenile criminal proceedings preferred
