About the role
The Day Camp Counselor position is responsible for the supervision of campers in a small group setting. The role aims to build relationships and develop character in all YMCA constituents, under the guidance and supervision of the Senior Manager of Youth Development.
Responsibilities
- Supervises campers in a seasonal day camp setting.
- Provides a quality experience to children and parents focused on YMCA core values.
- Maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals.
- Identifies and meets each camper’s needs.
- Carries out camp program objectives.
- Plans and implements culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values program activities.
- Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
- Attends staff meetings and trainings.
- Supervises and participates in all assigned aspects of the camper’s day, including camper sign-in and sign-out, lunch times, and extended AM and PM duties as assigned.
- Fulfills YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
- Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff.
- Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
- Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
- Maintains a positive attitude and demonstrates cleanliness, punctuality, and sportsmanship.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- One year or more of college preferred.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Previous experience working with children, preferably in a day camp setting.
- Desire and ability to work with children.
- Ability to relate to one’s peer group, as well as ability to accept supervision and guidance.
- CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training during Pre-Season Camp Trainings.
- Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.

- Good character, integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control.
