POSITION SUMMARY

The Lifeguard ensures a safe environment within a given aquatics area by maintaining a high level of alertness, conducting area patrols, and localized emergency assistance. They also warn swimmers of improper activities or danger, prevent incidents related to aquatic programming, and serve as a certified responder at a given YMCA location.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Ensure a safe environment within a given aquatics area by maintaining a high level of alertness, conducting area patrols, and localized emergency assistance.
  • Enforce pool policies, guidelines, and safety procedures, and warn swimmers of improper activities or danger.
  • Prevent incidents related to aquatic programming and areas.
  • Actively work as a certified responder, administering first aid or other emergency procedures in the event of injury, rescuing swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administering CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary.
  • Inspect pool facilities, equipment, and water to ensure they are safe and usable.
  • Aid other lifeguards in cleaning the pool, related facilities, equipment, performing water tests, and recording on daily log sheets.
  • Grow the water safety skills of program participants and provide individual and/or group instruction as needed.
  • Create a fun and safe atmosphere that fosters learning and personal development of the YMCAs core values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Be 16 years of age with a valid Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard certification.
  • Have some sort of Lifeguard work experience.
  • Hold CPR, AED, and FIRST AID for the professional responder certifications.
  • Pass a pre-work swim test, demonstrating skills.
  • Show strong conviction and responsibility, along with sound decision-making skills.
  • Be knowledgeable about on-site protocols, operational procedures, and safety policies.
  • Know methods and techniques for providing on-site emergency medical services.
  • Be able to move around the work environment independently.
  • Be capable of sitting, standing, or reaching for extended periods of time.
  • Communicate via computer, multi-line phone, and smartphone.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is required to sit, stand, or reach for extended periods of times, move around the work environment independently, push, pull, or lift up to 25 pounds for short periods of time. Employee is exposed to noise, chlorine, and fluctuating temperatures.
