ATI · Richburg, SC · 6 days ago
EngineeringFull-time

At ATI, we engineer specialty materials that power the next generation of aircraft, spacecraft, surgical implants, and energy systems. This 10‑week summer 2027 internship in Rolling Engineering is based in Richburg, SC and is open to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline. As a Rolling Engineering Intern, you’ll work directly with the Rolling team to analyze mill performance, investigate process variation, and identify opportunities to improve rolling operations — combining engineering fundamentals, statistical analysis, and CAD skills with hands‑on exposure to everyday shop operations in the mill.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct a statistical review of cobbles on the rolling mill, including cobble locations, grades, speeds, causes, and other factors to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Analyze cobbles associated with restbar influence, comparing old versus new restbar styles.
  • Perform a statistical review of dimensional measurements from the mill compared with laser gauge measurements to evaluate the influence of downstream equipment on bar size.
  • Reverse engineer existing equipment and create engineering drawings for equipment where drawings are not currently available.
  • Analyze rolling process data to identify trends, investigate variation, and support mill performance improvements.
  • Partner with Operations and Engineering teams to support day‑to‑day rolling mill projects and shop operations.

What You'll Gain

  • Hands‑on experience with metal rolling processes and mill operations.
  • Practical experience using statistical and data analysis to investigate manufacturing performance.
  • Experience analyzing rolling mill cobbles, dimensional variation, and process conditions.
  • Exposure to laser gauge measurements and downstream equipment influences on product dimensions.
  • Experience with reverse engineering and creating equipment drawings using CAD tools.
  • Direct exposure to the everyday shop operations and practices of a rolling mill.
  • Opportunities to collaborate with Operations and Engineering teams on real‑world manufacturing improvement projects.
  • Potential opportunity to transition into a full‑time Engineer – Operations position at ATI after graduation.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft Office products, particularly Excel.
  • Experience with statistical analysis and data analysis.
  • Basic training or experience with AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to interpret data, identify trends, and communicate findings.
  • Interest in manufacturing, metal rolling, and industrial operations.
  • Willingness to work hands‑on in a mill and shop‑floor environment.
