On-siteEducationInternship
About the role
CesiumAstro’s Analog & Power Electronics team develops advanced power electronics for space and military products, covering the full development cycle from architecture to production release. Summer interns work side‑by‑side with experienced engineers on design projects that contribute to ongoing programs or the team’s technology roadmap, gaining hands‑on laboratory characterization and troubleshooting experience.
Responsibilities
- Support the development of multi‑output power supply modules and point‑of‑load (PoL) power supplies for RF and digital boards.
- Participate in power architecture development, part selection, schematic and PCB design, verification testing, and production release.
- Perform hands‑on laboratory characterization and troubleshooting of power electronics.
- Contribute to the team’s technology development roadmap through design projects.
Requirements
- U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residency, conditional residency, asylee, refugee status, or eligibility for required U.S. Department of State authorizations.
- Current enrollment in an MS or PhD program in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering with a focus on analog or power electronics.
- GPA of 3.5 or higher.
- Strong fundamentals in electronics and coursework in power electronics, modeling and control, control theory, linear/non‑linear systems, power systems, or analog electronics.
- Knowledge of DC‑DC converter topologies (e.g., linear regulator, buck, buck‑boost, flyback, forward, half‑bridge, full‑bridge).
- Hands‑on experience with lab instruments such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, impedance analyzers, electronic loads, power sources, and signal generators.
- Experience with analysis and simulation tools (e.g., SPICE, LTspice, SIMetrix/SIMPLIS, PLECS, Simulink, MATLAB, MathCAD, ANSYS Q3D, SiWave, HyperLynx).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Skills
- Practical experience designing and building power electronics hardware for research projects, competitions, extracurricular activities, prior internships, or advanced coursework.
- Proficiency with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (Altium, OrCAD, Allegro, Xpedition).
- Experience with power magnetics modeling, design, and laboratory characterization.
- Knowledge of voltage‑mode or peak‑current‑mode control, including control‑loop modeling and testing.
- Familiarity with GaN or SiC wide‑bandgap power semiconductor devices.
- Understanding of soft‑switching and resonant converter topologies (LLC, CLLC, series resonant, phase‑shifted full bridge, dual active bridge, etc.).
- Programming skills for hardware test and data processing (Python, MATLAB, etc.).
Pay
All CesiumAstro internships are compensated competitively and are located onsite at one of the company’s facilities.
