About the role

Under the supervision of the Engineering Co‑Op Supervisor, the Summer 2027 Mechanical Engineering Co‑op assists the engineering team in researching, designing, testing, and validating creative and technically superior engineering solutions appropriate to each assigned project. The co‑op uses projects as a learning experience to further collegiate education while continuously improving.

Responsibilities

  • Design Solutions (40%) – Generates inventive ideas that meet functional requirements; adjusts designs based on feedback; develops design concepts for products, parts, and assemblies; creates detailed 3D CAD models; develops product documentation supporting high‑quality production; delivers engineering design excellence.
  • Quality (20%) – Manages personal deliverables and timing; delivers products that meet Kaleidoscope’s standards and, when appropriate, international standards and regulations; develops expertise in advanced CAD skills; stays abreast of new technologies; proposes process changes to improve quality, cost, and schedule.
  • Laboratory and Facilities Support (15%) – Performs experiments and testing supporting product development; helps maintain the laboratory and other facilities.
  • Documentation / Models (15%) – Develops project documentation including CAD data, reports, minutes, and presentations; uses model shop and 3D printers to build prototypes and breadboards.
  • Research (10%) – Participates in project research and brainstorming teams; observes and understands user research inputs; may participate in usability tests and observational research; performs targeted secondary research.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
  • Prior experience within an engineering design and manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Licenses/Certificates: None required.

Skills

  • Good analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Intermediate knowledge of SolidWorks 3D CAD.
  • Basic knowledge of geometric tolerance analysis.
  • Proficient in documentation, dimensioning, and specification writing.
  • Ability to synthesize solutions within allotted timeframes.
  • Basic skills in model‑shop processes, manufacturing processes, and tooling requirements.
  • Basic knowledge of research techniques, including moderating and observing.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Outlook).
  • Collaborative work style with colleagues and clients.
  • Critical thinking demonstrated by checking thinking for clarity, accuracy, relevance, logic, and fairness.
  • Strong written communication – concise, logical, grammatically appropriate documents.
  • Willingness to take direction, accept feedback, and remain adaptable.
  • Excellent oral communication with a professional demeanor.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information confidentially.

Working Conditions

Tools and equipment include a computer workstation, typical office equipment, and laboratory instruments/measurement equipment. Travel is minimal (up to 10% of the time). The role requires frequent sitting at a desk/workstation for long periods, digital dexterity, and hand‑eye coordination. Moderate lifting and carrying of supplies, equipment, and files may be required. Communication is performed via phone, computer, or in person. The environment is a mix of office and laboratory settings.
