SUE Crew Chief

About the role

This position requires candidates to be physically able to operate and maneuver truck equipment and the various tools utilized for underground utility exploration, designation, and survey locations. Must be extremely safety conscious and possess a strong work ethic. Candidate must be able to follow company procedures and policies when performing both SUE and survey duties.

Responsibilities

• Supervises SUE staff as needed to complete projects safely, on schedule, and within directed scope of work by Project Managers or Project Engineers/Surveyors
• Directs SUE tasks in the field
• Develops and implements Maintenance of Traffic signage at each site
• Communicates with clients and utility representatives
• Coordinates with SUE, Survey, and CADD staff for SUE-related tasks
• Performs QA/QC on designated utilities and test holes
• Leads field investigations
• Trains lower-level SUE technicians on proper designating and test hole techniques
• Secures equipment and guards against loss and theft
• Reads and interprets roadway plans, as-built, and utility company markups records
• Designates all utilities, including complex telecommunications, cable TV, gas, electric, water, traffic control, and any other utilities encountered in the field
• Capably uses multi-frequency pipe and cable locators and single-frequency induction devices (Metrotech 810, RD5000, Pipehorn)
• Operates the GPR proficiently
• Troubleshoots issues with designating equipment/able to make basic repairs (fixing leads)
• Adheres to safety standards, including proper operation of both electronic and mechanical equipment
• Maintains truck and electronic equipment on a daily basis, including but not limited to fluid levels, filters, and pneumatic/hand tools
• Uses and maintains concrete saw properly
• Jackhammer usage on varying pavement types
• Understands proper tamping procedures and can correctly patch asphalt and concrete
• Drives the designating vehicle and vacuum excavation truck
• Maintains equipment and keeps crew's assigned vehicle clean
• Fills out the field book legibly
• Completes field sketches
• Records information for test holes
• Records pole data

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required
• 4-5+ years of experience with SUE, utility designating, and test holes
• Valid Driver's license and clean MVR required
• Full understanding of ASCE's SUE Quality levels
• Supervisory experience
• Able to work independently
• Ability to pass DOT physical with the ability to obtain a DOT Medical Card within 60 days
• Ability to pass drug screen
• Routinely perform field surveying tasks, including the setup and use of GPS and other survey equipment
• Occasionally operate tools and instruments such as jackhammers, pogo tampers, and other equipment necessary for field surveying activities
• Routinely transport tools and equipment between job sites and assist with tasks such as installing construction stakes, tying out existing intersection ties, and establishing or locating vertical and horizontal control points
• Routinely conduct field surveys in diverse environments, including roadways, bridges, and control projects
• This may involve walking extended distances and working for prolonged periods
• Frequently work outdoors for durations exceeding two hours in various weather conditions to complete assigned surveying tasks
• Technically and mechanically inclined
• Computer savvy and able to operate advanced software
• Understands physics and advanced utility designating theory
