About the Role

The Male Community Reentry Program (MCRP) is a 200-bed residential facility for adult males with less than two years remaining on their prison sentences. Eligible individuals complete their sentences in the community through MCRP, which offers rehabilitative services focused on substance use disorder (SUD), mental health care, primary care, employment, education, housing, family reunification, and social support. Treatment typically lasts 6 to 12 months.

The SUD Counselor III is an integral part of an interdisciplinary team supporting clients through assessment, counseling, case management, and system navigation in a supportive treatment environment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain an assigned caseload of up to 25 clients, providing individualized weekly counseling.
  • Facilitate group counseling sessions and community meetings.
  • Link clients to internal and external resources based on treatment needs.
  • Teach classes on treatment-related topics to assist clients in meeting goals.
  • Collaborate with clients and resources to develop and maintain treatment plans, transition plans, progress notes, and updates.
  • Perform crisis intervention and communicate with the treatment team.
  • Monitor and document client medication administration, ensuring secure storage and proper accounting.
  • Accompany clients to offsite appointments as needed.
  • Assign and verify completion of client duties.
  • Support the intake process and maintain supplies.
  • Collect, clean, or dispose of biohazard waste; disinfect rooms and common areas.
  • Transport clients as needed.
  • Maintain safety and security of clients in the facility, including periodic house runs, property searches, and observation logs.
  • Respond to medical emergencies, including overdoses, and perform substance use tests (urinalysis, breathalyzer).
  • Document counseling sessions, client updates, and incidents in compliance with program and contract requirements.
  • Complete discharge paperwork and agency assessments.
  • Attend meetings and actively participate in residential service delivery.
  • Plan and facilitate celebrations and special events; work weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Complete assigned training on time and maintain certification compliance.
  • Assist with onboarding and training of new employees, interns, volunteers, or as assigned.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Certification as a Substance Use Disorder Counselor from an accredited California agency (CCAPP, CAADE, CADTP).
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Valid California Driver’s License preferred.
  • At least one year of experience as a registered substance abuse or behavioral disorder counselor or recovery specialist in a community mental health or residential setting.
  • Experience carrying a caseload or ability to carry.
  • Must complete a background check and Live Scan.
