Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) seeks a postdoctoral research associate to develop multi-modal deep learning models for subsurface geoscience applications, including seismic and geodetic data. The term of the appointment is two years, with the option to extend to a third year based on performance and funding. This is an on-site position in Los Alamos, NM.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and test state-of-the-art machine learning models for subsurface geoscience applications.
  • Collaborate with scientists at LANL and external academic partners.

Requirements

  • Research experience in deep learning model development and applications in subsurface geoscience.
  • Publication record in subsurface geoscience and deep learning applications.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C/C++.
  • Experience using supercomputing and HPC resources.
  • Strong communication skills, as evidenced by oral presentations at conferences.
  • Experience working on interdisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to obtain a Q-level clearance, which usually requires U.S. citizenship.
  • A Ph.D. in a STEM field related to geodesy, seismology, subsurface geoscience, applied mathematics, computer science, physics, or a related field. For a postdoctoral appointment, the candidate must have completed all Ph.D. requirements by the commencement of the appointment or be within five years of Ph.D. completion.

  • Experience with big-data processing and analysis methods.
  • Experience with development or support of research projects and proposals.
  • Ability to plan and organize assignments to meet project deliverables.
  • Ability to bring creative solutions to complex problems.

The Environmental Sciences (EES) Division at LANL solves complex problems in environment, energy, and national security using capabilities in earth and environmental sciences. Core disciplines include Geology, Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geodynamics, Geography, Hydrology, Atmospheric Science, Ecology, Environmental Science, Computational Science, and Geotechnical Engineering.
