Substitute Teacher

Duration: 11 months (End Date: June 30, 2027, possible extension). Non-exempt, part-time position with hours varying based on need, up to 40 hours per week.

About the Role

The Substitute Preschool Teacher at Occidental College Child Development Center collaborates with Lead Preschool Teachers and other educators to facilitate daily classroom operations and supervise children aged 2-5. This on-call position involves covering teaching roles when regular teachers are absent. Substitutes must work effectively within a team, adapt to various classrooms and age groups, foster a safe and respectful environment, and build nurturing relationships with children and parents.

Responsibilities

• Child Supervision and Care (40%)
  • Provide constant supervision of children and attend to their physical and emotional needs.
  • Ensure children’s safety and well-being.
• Assist in General Classroom and Center-wide Duties (35%)
  • Share responsibility for maintaining a clean and safe Center.
  • Contribute to smooth Center operations and assist teachers and children in all groups as needed.
  • Respond to direction from Lead Preschool Teachers, other teachers, and the Director.
  • Assume Lead Preschool Teacher duties as needed.
  • Complete routine paperwork and administer medications as required.
• Relationships and Communication (10%)
  • Provide nurturing and responsive care to children.
  • Establish open and respectful communication with parents.
  • Contribute to a positive, community-oriented classroom environment.
• Assist with Curriculum Implementation (15%)
  • Work with Lead Preschool Teachers to implement a developmentally appropriate, play-based curriculum.
  • Assist with set-up, implementation, and clean-up of daily activities.

Requirements

• A minimum of 12 semester units in Child Development, including:
  • A basic Child Growth and Development course.
  • A course on Child, Family, and Community.
  • A course on planning Curriculum for young children.
• A minimum of 1 year of experience working in a play-based early childhood education setting.
• Understanding of basic Child Development theories and current best practices in Early Childhood Education.
• Familiarity with developmentally appropriate, play-based, emergent curriculum models.
• Strong understanding of the Child Development Center’s educational philosophy.
• Familiarity with Title 22 Regulations.
• Understanding of procedures for completing accident/incident reports.

Preferred Qualifications

• 18 or more units in Child Development, including the 3 core courses listed above.
• 2 or more years of experience working in a play-based early childhood education setting.
• Experience working in a program that utilizes an emergent curriculum.

Pay

Expected hiring range: $20.00–$23.00 per hour.
