Departmental Overview

Residential and Student Services Programs, part of the Division of Student Affairs, provides comprehensive residential student life, dining services, safe and clean residence halls, and a well-planned orientation for students, staff, and faculty. The Early Childhood Education Program (ECEP) offers child care for University children aged 3 months to 5 years old.

Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Substitute Teacher supports play-based curriculum and meets individual child needs. They perform daily health and safety checks, prepare materials, and collaborate with the classroom team.

Responsibilities

  • Provides primary care giving and maintains daily intake and comments with parents.
  • Performs and records focused child observations and completes California Department of Education (CDE) and California Department of Social Services (DSS) required DRDP assessments.
  • Participates in preparing materials and classroom opportunities that meet individual needs.
  • Supports National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) "best practices" and Program for Infant and Toddler Care (PITC) philosophy in infant/toddler rooms.
  • Maintains a positive, safe, and nurturing environment for young children and families.
  • Develops trusting relationships with children, parents, and colleagues.
  • Conducts daily health and safety checks on children, performs classroom equipment and playground safety inspections, and maintains a well-organized classroom.
  • Models project-based developmental teaching and PITC teaching styles, as appropriate for the age group assigned.
  • May coach, student assistants, and volunteers.
  • Maintains child family confidentiality of information and records.
  • Monitors the sign-in sheets, attendance, and meal counts.
  • Supports the classroom team by sharing relevant information with co-workers.
  • Uses respectful language and positive guidance when addressing children’s behavior.
  • Participates in classroom management to maintain a positive learning atmosphere.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work with diverse clientele using patience, tact, sensitivity, and diplomacy.
  • Minimum of 12 Early Childhood Education units required.
  • Three or more ECE Infant or Toddler units required or must obtain them within 6 months of hire.
  • Knowledge of developmental needs and appropriate learning experiences for children 3 months to 5 years.
  • Familiarity with child development theory and practice.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, stand and walk up to 4 hours per day, and work at child's level.
  • Pediatric First Aid and CPR (or must obtain within 3 months of hire).
  • Must have received fingerprint clearance through the Department of Social Services Community Care Licensing Division.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Education / Training

  • Obtained a minimum of 12 ECE units-transcripts will be required to confirm units obtained.
  • Must have 3 or more infant / toddler development units or be able to obtain them within 6 months of hire.
  • 24 ECE Units are preferred - transcripts will be required to confirm units obtained.

Licenses / Certifications

  • Maintains current Pediatric CPR/First Aid certification, TB and health screening clearance.
  • Completion of blood borne pathogen training upon hire and on an annual basis.
  • Must complete on-line State of CA Mandated Reporter training - upon hire.

Salary & Benefits

The budgeted hourly range for this position is $28.13 (Step 1).

This is not a visa opportunity. This position does not include sponsorship of a new consular H-1B visa petition that would require payment of the $100,000 supplemental fee.

This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Clerical & Allied Services Unit (CX) between the University of California and Teamsters Local 2010.
