Substitute School Nurse for the 2026/27 School Year
Purpose And Objectives Of The Position
The Substitute School Nurse provides the fullest possible educational opportunity for each district student by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the district schools. To accomplish these tasks, the Substitute School Nurse works closely with the staff and administration of the District.

Qualifications
- Current Kansas Nurses License (RN)
- Public school experience preferred
- Possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and physical attributes necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the Central Office (after an employment offer is made).
Essential Functions
- To help identify and monitor children with health problems
- To review students’ health records with district and building personnel as needed
- To plan for and assist in the screening and re-screening of students
- To interpret any significant findings
- To serve as a resource to health room assistants and other school staff
- To assess the health status of students
- To collaborate with students, parents, and teachers to obtain treatment & rehabilitation
- To conduct health-related screenings of students for vision, hearing, scoliosis, and routine weight and measurement checks, and refer students when necessary
- To provide first aid for illness/injury
- To serve as a resource person in providing health education programs for students and school personnel
- To promote a positive working relationship between the school and community health resources
- To assist in identifying and accommodating students with specific health issues or disabilities
- To assist the administration in evaluating and implementing a healthy school environment
- To notify parents of sick or injured students, informing them of the action taken and seeking further instructions from them
- To have the ability to implement and follow all school district policies during all activities
- To keep current on new information, innovative ideas, and techniques
- To keep student information and records confidential
- To respond to information requests in a cooperative, courteous, and timely manner
- To implement and follow all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan
- To perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the principal or other administrative staff
Physical Demands
- Sit and stand for extended periods
- Bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead
- See and read a computer screen and/or printed materials
- Hear and understand English at normal classroom levels, both indoors, outdoors, and on the telephone
- Speak in an audible tone so that others may clearly understand in regular classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone
- Physically able to independently lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height
