Substitute Nurse- LPN (2026-2027)
About the role
The Springfield Public Schools is a cultural gem in Western Massachusetts dedicated to providing a learning environment that enhances students' knowledge and critical thinking skills. This position requires a current valid license to practice as a Nurse in Massachusetts and three years of responsible professional nursing experience in school nursing or a related field.
Responsibilities
- Assess and evaluate students' health, pertinent family history, and home factors.
- Counsel students, parents, and school personnel about health problems and issues.
- Maintain health records, conduct research, and evaluate school health programs.
- Notify appropriate individuals of immediate and potential health-related problems.
- Cook up and coordinate health resources of the school, home, community, and allied health agencies/hospitals.
- Prepare regular written reports for supervisor, MDPH, and other relevant agencies.
- Develop an individual health care plan as needed and coordinate with other providers and school personnel.
- Document pertinent information in student records according to the Standards of Practice.
- Provide emergency care for all students on school premises in case of injury or sudden illness.
- Administer medication to students with parent/guardian and physician consent.
- Perform site-mandated screenings in vision, hearing, scoliosis, TB testing, and other health-related activities as deemed appropriate by state and city departments of public health.
- Provide information about health and disease prevention in cooperation with health education programs as requested by administrators.
- Participate in school health-related activities as deemed appropriate by the principal/supervisor.
- Act as a resource in health education to students and families.
- Initiate, promote, maintain, and implement programs for the recognition, prevention, and control of disease, including giving immunizations.
- Collaborate with staff in school and health centers.
- Coordinate sport physical clearance coverage as needed.
Qualifications
- A current valid license to practice as a Nurse in Massachusetts.
- Three years of responsible professional nursing experience in school nursing or a related field preferred.
