Qualifications
Nursing diploma from an approved nursing program, or an associate's degree in nursing; bachelor's degree in nursing preferred; two years of experience working as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.
Current, documented proficiency in the care of patients with chronic illnesses and the use of basic medical equipment.
A valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
CPR/AED Certification (Healthcare Provider adult and child level); Preferred: CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor Certification and National Certification as a School Nurse (NCSN).
Duties And Responsibilities
- Screens all children, within sixty (60) administrative working days of initial enrollment in a public school in vision and hearing to determine if formal assessment is indicated.
- Administers medications and first aid.
- Keeps logs of visits and care given, maintains adequate clinic supplies.
- Administers Scoliosis screening to all students in grades 5 through 9.
- Assists the Supervisor of Nursing Services in planning, developing, and coordinating a system-wide program of health services.
- Conducts physical inspections, including vision and hearing testing on all students in assigned schools.
- Provides follow-up services for students with health problems, which includes counseling with students, parents and/or teachers and determines whether or not corrections have been made.
- Maintains clinic cleanliness.
- Sends referral notes to parents to guardians by students, via telephoning, or by home visits when deemed necessary.
- Assists principals, teachers, and other staff members to develop, implement and evaluate effective classroom health programs in terms of student and community needs.
- Works with community agencies and health or science professional personnel outside the school to improve health care of students and other school personnel.
- Serves as consultant to principals, teachers, and staff personnel and provides staff training on health-related matters.
- Attends Child Study meetings and performs follow-up tasks.
- Provides instruction to small groups relevant to health matters.
