Maintain safety and security of the correctional facility staff, prisoners, and visitors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides custody, care, security, control, and discipline of persons charged or convicted of offenses of State or local law; promotes an environment of safety and well being for the staff and prisoners.
- Maintains correctional facility order and discipline at all times.
- Directs and supervises prisoners; performs periodic prisoner counts.
- Provides care for prisoners; dispenses and oversees meals; administers medications and oversees prisoner hygiene and showers; schedules medical, counseling, personal and other appointments, and conducts visiting sessions.
- Schedules transportation for appointments and visits outside of the facility; transports and arranges transport for prisoners; documents all transports; delivers mail and allows prisoners to make personal and legal phone calls.
- Patrols and inspects the correctional facility for contraband, sanitation and orderliness.
- Supervises and observes persons visiting prisoners.
- Maintain records of institution's activities including log book and incident reports.
- Transport and escort prisoner to court and other appointments.
- Performs the booking and releasing processes.
- Provide training and leadership to other Correctional Officers as required.
- Reports infractions of rules and regulations and suspicious actions; takes or recommends appropriate response.
- Recommend operational improvements when necessary.
- Cleans staff office and washes facility laundry.
- Participates in activities that promote the Department’s Community Oriented Policing philosophy; this includes, but is not limited to, allowing the department to take and use an employee’s photo and information for public relations and public service purposes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of Police Department policies and procedures related to correctional facility operations.
- Knowledge of Federal, State, and Borough laws and criminal codes related to prisoners, detention facility policy and procedures, Police Department written directives, and Alaska standards pertaining to detention facilities.
- Knowledge of behavior patterns of incarcerated persons, techniques of detainee control, defensive tactics, discipline protocols, and grievance procedures.
- Skill in remaining alert at all times and reacting quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
- Skill in writing and completing accurate reports and observations.
- Skill in operating booking equipment, including cameras, fingerprinting equipment, and computer data entry programs.
- High school graduate or G.E.D./, a combination of 12 years of education and related work experience.
- Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certification within 90 days of hire;
- Ability to pass a required training program within a one-year probationary period.
- Citizen of the United States per Alaska Administrative Code (AAC) 13 AAC 85.210 (a) (1).
- Must be 19 years of age or older at the time of hire per Alaska Administration Code (AAC) 13 AAC 85.215 (a) (2).
- Ability to pass a thorough personal-history investigation of the person to determine character traits and habits indicative of moral character.
- Valid Driver’s License that meets the North Slope Borough insurance criteria;
