Substitute Bus Driver

About the role

A bus driver is responsible for safely driving students to and from school on a schedule assigned by the director of transportation. A bus driver is responsible for being at work on time every day.

Qualifications

To qualify for this role, you must have a Commercial Drivers License-Class A or B with P&S Endorsement’s plus 2 years experience driving an automobile. You must also have successfully completed behind-the-wheel training and the 20 hr. Texas Department of Public Safety Certification Course. Additionally, you must pass randomly administered drug and alcohol tests, have clearance on a criminal history check, have acceptable references, and pass an annual DOT physical examination. You must also have an interest in and liking for children and young adults.

Special Knowledge/Skills

To be successful in this role, you must have the ability to operate all types of buses in the SISD Fleet in a safe and effective manner. You must also be able to follow written and verbal instructions in English, manage students in a safe and appropriate transportation environment, effectively communicate with parents and students, maintain confidentiality of all records, and communicate effectively orally and in written form with all levels of management.

Experience

You must be at least 21 years of age and have an acceptable motor vehicle record.

Responsibilities

• Check mailbox before each run for messages.
• Responsible for necessary record keeping functions in conjunction with local and state reporting.
• Responsible for the safe transportation of students to and from school.
• Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for the operation of school buses.
• Responsible for preventive care of their assigned bus, keeping it clean and fueled.
• Maintain current route maps and folders, and comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) to assure student records, behavior and readership confidentiality.
• Maintain appropriate student management environment and report student incidents to appropriate administrators.
• Communicate with the schools, public, and students in such a manner as to encourage their cooperation and respect.
• Use First Aide/Bio-Kit and may be exposed to bodily fluids and other contagions.
• Identify by name all of the students who ride the bus and maintain up-to-date seating charts for all runs.
• Follow the assigned route and adhere to established schedules, completing pre-trip and post-trip inspections before and after each run.
• Properly operate communication equipment and demonstrate bus evacuation to students on bus.
• Report all accidents, vehicle damage, and student injuries, and complete required reports.
• Be aware of all student’s disabilities and special needs if needed, and report any medical problems experienced by the students while being transported.
• Drive bus on extracurricular activities as needed and physically access and operate all emergency equipment and emergency exits.
• Be readily able to immediately assist passengers regardless of location in the bus and evacuate the bus from any emergency exit safely and in a timely manner.
• Regular attendance and demonstrates ability to adjust to different assignments daily.
• Demonstrates ability to adjust to different student population daily and demonstrates the ability to work with Campuses.

School bus, safety equipment (flares, reflective signs), fire extinguisher.

Working Conditions

Possess mental maturity and emotional stability to operate vehicle safely with distractions from sometimes loud and boisterous students. Maintain emotional control under stress. Occasional district travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours. The role requires walking, carrying, crouching, climbing, lifting (25-60 lbs), kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, and bending. You may be exposed to bodily fluids and other contagions, extreme weather conditions, and fluctuations in temperature.
