Substitute Bus Driver (2026-2027 School Year)
About the role
The Kent School District offers temporary hourly employment as a Bus Driver Trainee. This role involves transporting students to and from school and school-sponsored activities under the supervision of a dispatcher.
Responsibilities
- Safely transport students to and from school and school-sponsored activities
- Follow assigned route schedules and keep routes updated with dispatcher’s help
- Maintain student discipline procedures and training
- Assist in maintaining bus equipment by keeping the interior clean and reporting vehicle service
- Drive a variety of school buses and be willing to drive regardless of the weather
- Work with traffic and perform tasks such as bending, stooping, lifting, and stretching
- Ensure safe operation of school buses through visual acuity and concentration
- May be placed into permanent positions as available
Requirements
- Must be 21 years of age
- Have less than 3 moving violations within the last 5 years
- Be in good health and willing to submit to a drug test
- Have or be willing to acquire a valid Washington State CDL license
- Meet all state and district health and agility requirements
- Meet all DOT, state, and district requirements for physical condition, criminal history records, and drug and alcohol testing
- Keep state and district certifications current
- Have a high school diploma or GED and successfully complete the district bus driver training
- Experience driving large vehicles is helpful

Benefits
The Kent School District provides paid training for eligible bus driver candidates hired as Bus Driver Trainees. Trainees are hired as temporary employees while completing the 4-week training to obtain CDL Class B, passenger endorsement, airbrakes, and school bus endorsement. The temporary employee rate is $17.13 per hour, with a training maximum of 200 hours. Upon completion of training, the trainee may be offered a continuing position as a regular or substitute bus driver.
Pay
The pay rate for this role is $31.22 - $36.87 per hour.
Schedule
Most work hours are approximately 5:45 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. The hours vary greatly according to the assignment. Drivers may be asked to drive at any time of the day.
