Substitute Art Teachers (Two Positions)

About the role

We're hiring two substitute art teachers to cover our regular weekly classes and occasional needs. Our lessons are already planned, materials are provided, and we pay for setup and cleanup.

Responsibilities

• Cover classes when our regular teachers are out.
• Run a pre-planned lesson for mixed age groups (ages 3+).
• Take ownership of a regular weekly class when one becomes available.
• Teach or assist at weekend workshops, birthday parties, and summer camps.
• Represent the studio at community events.
• Reset workstations, organize supplies, and leave the studio ready for the next class.

Requirements

• Consistent availability during your stated windows, and willingness to take short-notice coverage.
• Experience teaching, tutoring, coaching, or leading groups of children.
• A working background in visual arts — drawing, painting, or clay/ceramics.
• Genuine reliability and punctuality.
• Real classroom management skills with young children.
• Warmth with kids, and clear, friendly communication with parents at drop-off and pickup.
• The ability to pass a background check.

Qualifications

• A degree (or in-progress degree) in visual arts or art education.
• Prior experience in an art studio, camp, or school setting.
• Comfort teaching a lesson you did not write, for a group you have not met before.

Skills

• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Ability to adapt to new situations and follow directions.

Pay

$25.00 – $28.00 per hour, based on experience and teaching responsibilities.

Schedule

Our classes run weekday afternoons and early evenings, plus Friday and Saturday mornings. Events and parties are usually weekend afternoons; camps run during the day in summer.

September 8 – October 15: This stretch is the exception to the on-call pattern. We have a defined set of classes to cover. Every class includes at least 30 minutes of paid setup before and 30 minutes of paid cleanup after, at the same rate as teaching — so the paid block is always longer than the class itself.

• Mondays, 5:00–6:00pm — on the clock 4:30–6:30pm (2 paid hours)
• Tuesdays, 5:15–6:30pm — on the clock 4:45–7:00pm (2.25 paid hours)
• Wednesdays, 5:15–6:30pm — on the clock 4:45–7:00pm (2.25 paid hours)
• Thursdays, 6:00–7:15pm — on the clock 5:30–7:45pm (2.25 paid hours)
• Saturdays, 10:00–11:15am and 11:30am–12:30pm — on the clock 9:30am–1:00pm (3.5 paid hours for both classes)

After October 15: The role shifts to on-call substitute coverage (unless the substitute chooses to be the primary teacher for an available weekly class).
