About the Role

Substation Technician 3 at Irby Construction Company shall possess a minimum of two (2) years of experience in a substation construction type atmosphere. This is not limited to 1 year of vocational schooling. Substation, Commercial, or Industrial construction experience is a plus. Substation Technician 3 must be self-motivated and willing to grow their knowledge base as well as their role in the company. The individual will learn all the skills required for assignment from the foreman for complete substation construction installations and develop in-depth knowledge of all applicable OSHA codes and standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform typical substation construction from Greenfield to remodels, including:
  • Trenching for ground grid & conduits
  • Backfilling and compacting
  • Foundation drilling, digging, and installation
  • Lifting, placing, and setting structural steel
  • Lifting, placing, and installing insulators and busswork
  • Installing battery banks
  • Lifting, placing, and installing substation equipment such as breakers, metering, transformers, arrestors, etc.
  • Moving, pulling, and installation of control cable to medium voltage cable
  • Placing finish stone and smoothing out the yard
• Learn from peers on substation construction techniques
• Grow as a person and advance your career
• Assist crews with daily tasks
• Ensure quality of work is performed according to specifications
• Work in storm restoration operations to rebuild and/or repair damaged power systems
• Attend training classes or seminars for new processes, safety regulations, or refresher training

Requirements

• At least two (2) years of substation construction experience
• Adherence to all Company Safety and Health Policies
• Valid driver’s license (CDL Class A preferred but not required)
• Willingness to stay out of town and travel as project requires
• Ability to work typical shifts of 4-10 hours or 5-10 hours, including overtime and extended periods
• Ability to work outside 100% of the time in inclement weather (heat, cold, rain, snow)
• Ability to walk and work across uneven terrain
• Ability to climb on and off large trucks and equipment
• Ability to lift in excess of 50 pounds daily
• Willingness to work off the ground in man baskets at heights of 20’-60’ (with possibility of up to 120’)
• Ability to work around energized systems
• Reliable transportation

Knowledge of electrical, below-grade, or concrete foundation trades is a plus. High-voltage substation construction knowledge or experience is also a plus.
