Substation Project Engineer - Physical Design

About the role

We are seeking an analytical, self-starter with proven success in design and project coordination for electrical substations. This position entails detail engineering and design of substation projects from conceptual design through construction for voltages ranging from 4kV to 345kV. The successful candidate will design, schedule resources, and lead technical efforts for electrical substation projects. The position is located at our Boerne office and may require some overnight travel to project sites.

Responsibilities

  • Perform design calculations, estimates, and statistics using industry tools and methods.
  • Create drawings, visual aids, and engineering studies for substation projects, including one-lines, three-lines, control schematics, wiring diagrams, relay panel arrangements, specifications, conduit, and cable sizing/routing.
  • Apply understanding of DC/AC circuits, logic design, and power systems.
  • Understand and apply the National Electrical Safety Code to the design process.
  • Develop bill of materials based on the design criteria.
  • Assist in preparing project schedules and budgets for timely completion.
  • Coordinate and assign tasks to construction or administrative staff.
  • Maintain good project documentation, including calculations, telephone conversations, design decisions, rationale, and filing copies of all pertinent information.
  • Attend project meetings with clients to coordinate design and address any issues.
  • Prepare project status reports and deliver to clients in a consistent and timely manner.
  • Perform quality control on project work to maintain expected standards for deliverables, including CAD work ensuring accurate scales, proper spelling, proper formatting, and completeness.
  • Develop and maintain positive professional relationships with key client personnel.
  • Stay abreast of changing technology, work planning, and design methodologies associated with substation design.
  • Represent the company and client when meeting with stakeholders, including property owners, other engineering firms, or construction services.
  • Ensure adherence to client standards to develop detailed scope and engineering plans for projects.
  • Partner with subject matter experts to prepare scope of work.
  • Perform administrative duties as required, including mailings, office supply management, and documentation reproductions.
  • Complete timesheets daily with project summaries in the invoicing standard format.
  • Prepare accurate and complete invoice letter write-ups for project work by the deadline, in accordance with the company’s standard format.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering.
  • EIT Certification or ability to obtain EIT Certification within 6 months of employment (PE is a plus).
  • 3–5 years’ experience in physical design engineering for electric substations.

  • Strong time management, organizational, and multitasking skills.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to listen and hear, good eyesight, sitting, standing, walking, and use of hands and arms.
