Substation Project Engineer III
Overview
Our client, a well-established energy consulting firm, is seeking a Substation Project Engineer III to lead substation design projects while mentoring a small team of engineers and CAD designers. This role will oversee the development of physical layout and Protection & Control packages, serve as the sealing engineer, and ensure high-quality, compliant deliverables. The position also requires managing client relationships and supporting business development with select accounts. Candidates must have an active PE license and 5–10 years of substation engineering experience with strong technical and leadership capabilities. This full-time position is located in Baton Rouge, LA; Raleigh, NC; and Owings Mills, MD. Candidates open to relocation to these locations are welcome to apply.
Responsibilities
- Mentor and guide a small team of engineers and CAD designers in the development of General/Physical Layout and Protection & Control packages for substation design projects.
- Lead and oversee the preparation of engineering deliverables to ensure technical accuracy, quality, and compliance with industry standards.
- Serve as the sealing engineer for the majority of the team’s work products, taking responsibility for final engineering approvals.
- Manage client relationships by acting as a primary point of contact, addressing project needs, and ensuring customer satisfaction.
- Support business development efforts by engaging with select clients, identifying opportunities, and contributing to project growth.
- Collaborate with the Divisional Manager on project execution, team performance, and strategic initiatives.
- Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and performance feedback to support team development and continuous improvement.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university
- Active US Professional Engineer (PE) license (no sponsorship available)
- 5–10 years of substation / power delivery engineering experience
- Strong hands-on substation design experience (physical layout and/or P&C)
- Able to perform calculations, develop design packages, and review drawings
- Must be able to demonstrate strong technical knowledge of substation work
- Experience with full substation scope (physical, P&C, relay settings, field support)
- Experience mentoring junior staff or leading small teams
- Consulting engineering or EPC experience preferred
- Client-facing experience and strong communication skills
- Exposure to commissioning and relay testing
