About the role

The Substation Project Engineer is responsible for performing engineering assignments requiring professional proficiency of subject matter and experience associated with electric distribution and transmission substations. They act as a project engineer for all substation project assignments and are accountable for leading the engineering design effort, including development of engineering solutions and ensuring quality of deliverables, managing engineering schedule, coordinating the efforts of other assigned engineering disciplines and contract engineers, and close coordination with procurement and construction personnel.

  • Defines the concept, scope, and detailed engineering aspects of substation and switching station projects.
  • Supports the preparation and development of project cost estimates and schedules.
  • Serves as a technical project team leader and applies standard engineering techniques and procedures on complex projects.
  • Provides technical guidance and leadership to other junior engineers to assist in the development of their technical skills.
  • Fills the role of project engineer providing electrical discipline leadership, including interdisciplinary coordination, and scheduling.
  • Responsible for physical design of substations to include bus and equipment layouts, electrical clearances, grounding, lighting, lightning protection, and AC and DC distribution system configurations.
  • Supports the development of company standards and procedures.
  • Supports emergency and/or equipment failures as necessary to support operations.
  • Actively support storm and/or emergency restoration assignments as necessary.

Requirements

  • Applicable experience in 5kV through 345kV substation design in accordance with associated IEEE/ANSI standards.
  • 3-5 years related experience is required. Substation engineering experience is preferred.
  • Must be available to work in Berlin, CT in an office environment.
  • Must be available to work emergency restoration assignments as required.
  • Must be available to travel between MA/CT as necessary for substation site visits and other business needs.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering is required.
  • Strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products, familiarity with Bluebeam Revu, ability to navigate various software programs, and knowledge of basic computer skills - such as video conferencing and instant messaging.

  • Ability to prioritize project work for several projects occurring concurrently under budget and time constraints.
  • Collaborates with other engineering disciplines to ensure consistency and teamwork.
  • Collaborates with other departments such as System Planning, Distributed Energy Resources, Asset Management, Project Management, Project Scheduling, Siting and Permitting, and Plant Accounting, to support project planning, technical and financial approvals, scheduling, regulatory submittals and interrogatories, and project closeout.
  • Ability to interact with multiple internal departments and external companies of varying backgrounds and provide clear expectations to external entities.
  • Ensures that the design and specification of additions, modifications and replacements to the transmission and distribution systems are completed accurately and in accordance with internal and industry standards.
  • Responsible for supporting the development of company standards and procedures.
  • Responsible for the development and approval of project scopes, engineering designs, details, material ordering, and cost estimates, as necessary.
  • Responsible for the development and update of equipment specifications, participation in equipment RFP process, and review/approval of manufacturers’ drawings and documentation.
  • Responsible for hiring and managing the services of contract engineering firms, including development of their scope of work, review of submittals, and approval of invoices.
  • Provides technical support and direction to operating areas relative to system priorities, engineering guidelines and operating decisions during normal and emergency situations.

Schedule

The role is based in Berlin, CT and is offered on a Hybrid Schedule. Employees must work at least three days in the office, including Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the third day set by the employee and supervisor based on department needs. These guidelines apply to roles approved for remote work and are subject to change, based on managerial discretion and work performance.
