Substation Physical Engineer
About the role
As a Substation Physical Engineer, you will work on projects for electric utilities at voltages from 12kV up to 500kV. This role offers exposure to how power generation, including renewable energy, integrates into the electric system. You will use your knowledge of digital logic design, AC and DC circuits to design substation electrical projects while complying with quality control and safe work practices. You will maintain project scope, schedule, and budget as part of a design team that includes engineers, designers, and CAD technicians, working with client standards to implement designs.
Responsibilities
- Execute substation physical projects.
- Perform quality control checks on substation physical design projects.
- Read and design substation physical drawings such as one-line drawings, three-line drawings, plan-section drawings, foundation, and grounding drawings.
- Create and check bill of materials for substation physical projects.
- Attend site visits at customer locations.
- Interact with internal teams and clients to meet project needs.
- Meet deadlines under pressure.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field with 0+ years of substation physical design experience.
- Experience with grounding studies, lightning protection, and lighting studies.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with internal teams and clients.
- Ability to work independently with minimal direction and meet deadlines under pressure.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills in both team and independent environments.
- High level of computer competency.
- Willingness to travel to project and/or client sites.
Preferred Qualifications
- Engineer Intern (EI or EIT) professional certification.
- Professional Engineer (PE) License.
- Working knowledge of protection and control design.
- Experience with bus calculation.
- Experience with WinIGS or CDEGS.
- Master’s degree in a related field.

Pay
Pay Range: $57,850.00 - $104,575.00. The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
