About the Role

The Substation Journeyman performs highly skilled, journeyman-level electrical work in the operation, construction, maintenance, and repair of high voltage electric substations and related electrical and mechanical equipment. This role supports the construction of new substations as well as modifications and upgrades of existing substations for electrical utility companies.

Responsibilities

• Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance, repair, testing, adjusting, and troubleshooting of substation equipment/systems, including:
  • Ground grids and steel erection
  • Buswork (High and Low Voltage)
  • Airbreak / Hookstick Switches
  • Control Cable
  • Terminations (High / Low Voltage)
  • Control Buildings
  • Conduit and duck banks
  • Capacitor bank installations (23kv-230 kv)
  • Transformers, regulators, and circuit breakers
  • Circuit Switchers, motor-operated, and manual switches
• Troubleshoot and correct malfunctions of all substation equipment during installation and maintenance.
• Safely operate all company and related construction equipment used for substation, transmission, and distribution line construction.
• Follow company and industry safety protocols within the construction of substations.
• Maintain company vehicles, test equipment, and tools in good working condition.
• Frequently work with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect lives.
• Understand and comply with the Company’s Code of Business Conduct and Ethics.
• Other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

• Obtain and maintain a valid State Class C driver’s license.
• Previous substation experience.
• Willingness to travel around the Central US.

Preferred Qualifications

• OSHA 10 certification.
• 4+ years of substation experience.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Operates in a field environment with extended periods of bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, lifting in awkward positions, standing, and twisting.
• Works in inclement weather conditions, such as extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, ice, snow, and wind.
• Physically active role requiring the ability to bend, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Requires clarity of vision at 20 feet or more or 20 inches or less, with the ability to judge distance and space relationships.
• Requires precise hand-eye coordination and the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
