About the Role

The Substation General Foreman oversees the construction, maintenance, and operation of electrical substations. This role involves managing a team of craft foremen, technicians, laborers, and subcontractors to ensure compliance with safety regulations and directing on-site activities to maintain safe, efficient production.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Substation General Foreman leads a team of high-voltage electricians and sub-techs, along with subcontractors, for complete turnkey substation projects. They ensure quality, safety, and compliance on-site, coordinate project activities, and provide technical guidance to meet project goals. They serve as the direct point of contact for the client while onsite.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of substation crews.
  • Ensure project equipment, production, and material trackers are up to date.
  • Update POD and distribute by 9:00 AM daily to all applicable parties.
  • Conduct daily site inspections to ensure compliance with company and regulatory standards.
  • Ensure all work is performed safely and in compliance with company policies and industry regulations.
  • Oversee installation, maintenance, and repair of all substation equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, and protective relays.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex HV system issues and provide technical guidance to the team as needed.
  • Interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to execute project work in alignment with specifications.
  • Conduct regular inspections and assessments of substation operations.
  • Provide training and guidance to team members on equipment and safety procedures.
  • Promote a strong safety culture on-site, enforcing adherence to safety protocols, personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, and other regulatory standards.
  • Ensure all team members understand and follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures for HV systems.
  • Conduct weekly safety meetings, toolbox talks, and risk assessments to address site hazards and safe work practices.
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and project superintendents to plan and execute substation projects.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment status, and inventory.
  • Respond to emergency situations and coordinate repair efforts.
  • Implement preventive maintenance programs to enhance system reliability.
  • Communicate effectively with other departments and stakeholders regarding project status and operational issues.
  • Comply with all company policies.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned or deemed appropriate.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical degree or certification preferred.
  • Previous supervisory experience is highly desirable.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in using relevant tools and equipment.

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional lifting (up to 50 pounds), carrying, walking, and standing.
  • Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate computer keyboard and office equipment; vision for reading, recording, and interpreting information; speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and other team members.
  • Ability to move around project sites, which may involve walking, climbing stairs, and navigating uneven terrain.
  • Valid driver’s license.
