About the Role

Substation Foreman at Irby Construction Company shall possess a minimum of four (4) years of experience in a Journeymen electrical role. Substation, Commercial, or Industrial construction Journeymen electrical experience is a plus. Journeymen electricians must have a valid journeymen electrician card or be able to pass the Journeymen electricians test per government standards. The individual will possess all skills required for complete electrical installations and have in-depth knowledge of all applicable OSHA codes and standards, as well as the National Electrical Code.

This job is for Texas and spans several locations.

Responsibilities

  • Typical Substation construction from Greenfield to Remodels, including:
    • Trenching for ground grid & conduits
    • Backfilling and compacting
    • Foundation drilling, digging, and installation
    • Lifting, placing, and setting structural steel
    • Lifting, placing, and installing insulators and busswork
    • Lifting, placing, and installing substation equipment such as breakers, metering, transformers, arrestors, etc.
    • Moving and pulling control cable to medium voltage cable
    • Placing finish stone and smoothing out the yard
  • Job-Specific Duties:
    • Read and understand control cable schedules from the client
    • Ensure conduit sizes are correct for control cable pulls and installation techniques
    • Read P&C prints for proper termination of multiple conductor control cables (up to 12/C #12 down to 1/C 4/0 cables)
    • Perform or learn medium voltage terminations up to 34.5kv (training and certification provided)
    • Understand DC systems as well as AC systems
    • Supply insight on project construction regarding control cable pulling, installation, and termination
    • Work in energized panels
    • Knowledge of electrical, below-grade, or concrete foundation trade (a plus)
    • High Voltage Substation construction knowledge or experience (a plus)
    • Accountable for quality of work to ensure it is performed according to specifications

Requirements

  • Adheres to all Company Safety and Health Policies
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Willing to stay out of town and travel as the project requires
  • Available for typical work weeks of 4-10 hour shifts or 5-10 hour shifts
  • Willing to work overtime and extended periods of time
  • May work in storm restoration operations to rebuild and/or repair damaged power systems
  • May attend training classes or seminars for new processes, safety regulations, or refresher training
  • Ability to walk and work across uneven terrain
  • Climbing on and off large trucks and equipment
  • Work outside 100% of the time in inclement weather (heat, cold, rain, and possible snow)
  • Able to lift in excess of 50 pounds on a daily basis
  • Willing to work off the ground in man baskets (normal working heights are 20’-60’, with the possibility of working at 120’ heights)
  • Able to work around energized systems
  • Willing to assist with other activities while not actively performing Journeymen electrician duties
