Substation EPC Project Engineering Lead

About the role

The successful candidate will play a crucial role in shaping the future of power systems through substation EPC projects. They will collaborate with HDR's global power delivery staff and construction teaming partners to manage technical bid development, estimating, and project transitions.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Pursuit Champion / Manager on Substation EPC projects.
  • Transition management duties to Project Manager and execution team once the project is awarded.
  • Ensure clear scope, schedule, and budget expectations are communicated.
  • Facilitate discussions on technical risk analysis, preliminary layout, and design, and bill-of-material takeoff support.
  • Offer value engineering and constructability solutions.
  • Lead HDR scope, schedule, and budget development for AD projects.
  • Coordinate with land survey, geotechnical, transmission line, environmental, real estate, and GIS staff.
  • Estimate technical investments and participate in Go/No-Go discussions.
  • Assist in project risk assessments, SOQs, proposals, interviews, and negotiations.
  • Build out FEED teams and assist in project technical leadership roles.
  • Develop and maintain templates, standards, specifications, drawings, processes, and procedures for substation EPC pursuits and projects.
  • Provide EPC best practice guidance to pursuit and project delivery teams.
  • Perform team development, mentorship, and leadership activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering.
  • Professional Engineering License.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP).
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in substation design.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience building and leading engineering teams on EPC projects.
  • Proficient in CDEGS, BIM Software (Autodesk, Revit, Bentley).
  • Minimum 3 years of experience developing engineering scope, schedule, and budget estimates on EPC projects.
  • Experience developing EPC design and construction packages.
  • Specific experience performing all aspects of substation design, procurement, and construction including: estimating, engineering design, procurement, and construction specifications, and detailed design and drawing development for substation projects up to 500kV.
  • Understanding of on-line and general arrangement drawings, equipment selection, and the benefits/drawbacks of various physical arrangements.
  • Has experience offering value engineering solutions that align with industry best practices while leading discussions with material vendors and subcontractors on such topics.
  • Experience optimizing substation designs (site layouts, foundations, automation, etc.) in tandem with discipline-specific subject matter experts (SMEs).
  • Strong leadership skills and engineering management experience with multiple remote teams.
  • Self-starter with excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Strong conceptual, organizational, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and conferencing platforms (Zoom, WebEx, Teams, etc.).
  • Up to 20% travel may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering, or closely related field.
  • 10 years experience in related field.
  • Maintains a professional or Engineering registration and has related technical experience.
  • Works cooperatively with other business class regional directors, operations managers, technical directors, and marketing managers on business class efforts.
