Substation Engineer (PE)

This role is within the substation department, where the engineer will complete projects for utility customers with minimal direction, collaborating with in-house and client engineers and designers while providing training and guidance to lower-level engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Develop project scopes, one-line diagrams, and estimates for substation projects
  • Review substation construction drawings (electrical arrangements, plan and section views, grounding, cable and conduit drawings) and verify compliance with codes and standards
  • Engineer and design lightning protection, grounding, and equipment replacement/repair for substations
  • Make necessary changes and corrections to drawings and documentation
  • Verify proper use of equipment and material according to project documentation standards and codes
  • Ensure material and equipment are ordered and delivered on time for substation construction
  • Travel to project sites for walk downs and information gathering to scope and develop substations
  • Function as a project lead for substation projects
  • Lead, facilitate, and coordinate work activities within the team, department, or external stakeholders
  • Provide training and guidance to lower-level employees
  • Identify and initiate corrective action when project objectives are not being met
  • Interpret codes and regulations and develop standards for construction projects
  • Promote engineering professionalism and standards
  • Develop, recommend, and implement plans by establishing goals, objectives, and requirements for complex engineering projects

Requirements

  • Minimum of nine years of experience in utilities working with substations
  • Minimum of nine years of experience completing engineering projects from start to finish
  • Minimum of nine years of experience scoping, estimating, and ordering materials for substations
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering may count toward years of experience
  • PE License is required

Skills

  • Advanced ability to perform design calculations (battery sizing, AC/DC loads, system component selection, power transformer and circuit breaker selection, circuit protection, control and power cable selection/rating, bus bars, fittings, insulators, ground grid design, lightning protection)
  • Advanced knowledge of standards and codes (IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NESC)
  • Advanced understanding of equipment, material ordering, and bills of material for substation construction
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Ability to understand interrelationships between systems and component equipment
  • Stay abreast of new products, developments, technologies, procedures, and equipment

Pay

The pay range for this position is $57.69 - $74.51/hour. Individual compensation will depend on qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, and internal equity.

This is a permanent, fully remote position based in Tulsa, OK.
