Substation Engineer Consultant 2 - Grid

About the Role

This position offers the opportunity to manage project team(s) consisting of engineers, designers, estimators, controls, and scheduling professionals involved in the design, modification, and analysis of new and existing high-voltage substations. As a Substation Engineer Consultant, you will support challenging assignments ranging from individual projects to large-scale engineering-only, Engineer Procure, and EPC projects.

You will direct the team lead in coordinating detailed design phases for all aspects of electrical engineering work, manage work performed by other stakeholders such as civil, structural, and transmission lines, and ensure projects are completed with high quality, on time, and within budget. Additional responsibilities include identifying and tracking potential out-of-scope work, developing scope changes, coordinating with clients for approval, and ensuring compliance with specifications, codes, and client requirements.

This role involves collaboration with local and nationwide staff, preparing clear and concise technical reports, performing reviews of calculations, drawings, reports, and specifications, and communicating directly with clients for both project and account support. You will also support business development opportunities, perform independent reviews of work, and mentor team members.

This is a hybrid role based in our future Lexington, KY office, with an expectation to work in the office three days a week and remotely for two days. A generous relocation package is available, dependent on your location.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage project teams consisting of engineers, designers, estimators, and other professionals in the design and analysis of high-voltage substations.
• Coordinate detailed design phases for electrical engineering work and manage cross-disciplinary collaboration (civil, structural, transmission lines).
• Ensure projects are completed with high quality, on time, and within budget.
• Identify, track, and manage potential out-of-scope work; develop scope changes and coordinate client approvals.
• Coordinate systems design activities to ensure compliance with specifications, codes, and client requirements.
• Prepare technical reports and studies in a clear, concise manner.
• Review work performed by others, including calculations, drawings, reports, material specifications, and procurement documents.
• Communicate directly with clients for project and account support.
• Support business development opportunities with existing and potential clients.
• Perform independent reviews of scopes of work, proposals, procurement specifications, and contract documents.
• Develop and mentor team members.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical Engineering preferred).
• 10 or more years of experience in the design engineering and/or management of high-voltage utility projects.
• Specific experience in project management of utility transmission, substation, or energy projects.
• Knowledge of engineering standards including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEC, IEEE, and ANSI.
• Experience in preparation, oversight, or management of scopes of work, conceptual layouts, design basis, equipment selection, and calculations/specifications.
• Experience serving as a firm/client liaison in a support, engineering, or management role.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience in writing proposals, cost allocation, estimating, and risk assessment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
• Advanced management/business degree or certification (e.g., PMP).
• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• Experience with multiple contract arrangements, including EPC, Owners Engineer, Traditional, or Joint Ventures.
• Construction, start-up, or commissioning experience.

Pay

Compensation range: $145,310.00 – $222,001.00. Eligible positions may also participate in a yearly discretionary bonus.

Schedule

Hybrid work arrangement: Three days per week in the Lexington, KY office and two days remote.
