Substation Electrical Drafting Coordinator
About the role
The Assistant Technician, Drafting Support (Substation) will provide technical design and CADD support on projects to produce designs and specifications for utility, industrial, and commercial-scale substation energy projects. They will assist with research, design development, and preparation of drawings for transmission and distribution substations, power distribution systems, substation energy facilities, and protection and control systems.
Responsibilities
- Develops skills and generates CADD designs on various assigned projects of basic to moderate complexity.
- Generates accurate and concise design phase deliverables including reports, technical memoranda, design manuals, plans and profiles, models, sections, details, specifications, and material lists.
- Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, accuracy, and functionality.
- Supports engineers, project managers, and technical staff with drafting and design activities related to utility, industrial, and commercial-scale substation energy projects.
- Assists with research, design development, and preparation of drawings for transmission and distribution substations, power distribution systems, substation energy facilities, and protection and control systems.
- Collects, compiles, and organizes data from surveys, field notes, blueprints, schematics, specifications, and sketches to support drafting and design efforts.
- Uses 2D and 3D CADD software to prepare drawings of basic to moderate complexity with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Works closely with engineers to resolve design questions, incorporate markups, and revise drawings through multiple review cycles.
- Prepares design deliverables such as plans, profiles, sections, details, material lists, and supporting documentation.
- Affirms calculations, interprets contract plans, and identifies basic design or construction issues for escalation.
- Ensures drawings and designs adhere to applicable city, state, and federal codes, standards, and project specifications.
- Collaborates with cross-functional project teams to support project execution.
- Participates in training and development to build technical knowledge, drafting standards, and design best practices.
- Demonstrates responsible and ethical decision-making and adherence to WSP’s Code of Conduct, safety policies, and quality standards.
- Performs additional duties as needed to support business and project requirements.
Requirements
- High School Diploma.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant post-secondary education experience in a related field with prior drafting and design support experience.
- Familiarity with drafting and design support principles, practices, processes, methods, and techniques.
- Familiarity with relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
- Excellent research and evaluation skills with an analytical mindset.
- Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience.
- Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and comply with company policies.
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, spreadsheets, and tools.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree in a closely related discipline is preferred.
- Essential professional licensure/certification.
- Exposure to substation power delivery projects.

Pay
Expected Salary (all locations): $55,900 - $83,900
