Substation Drafter
Responsibilities
- Create and modify scaled 2D AutoCAD drawings that define the physical layout of electrical substations.
- Design foundation layouts, grounding layouts, conduit layouts, switchgear assembly layouts, control buildings, and electrical bus designs.
- Produce complete engineering drawing packages, including associated specifications and material requirements for substation projects.
- Support design criteria and standardization efforts to ensure consistency across transmission and distribution substation designs.
- Contribute to compliance efforts related to FAC-008 and other applicable standards and regulations.
- Transmit drawing packages and supporting specifications using the Transmission Engineering job transmittal program.
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with engineers and other departments involved in electrical substation design.
- Provide drafting and design support to Substation Construction, Field Services, Project Management, and Substation Maintenance departments.
- Incorporate safety, quality, scheduling, and cost considerations into all design work and documentation.
- Conduct site visits as needed to gather field information and verify design details for ongoing or planned projects.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in AutoCAD 2D for creating and modifying detailed engineering drawings.
- Strong drafting skills with experience in mechanical and electrical design concepts.
- Ability to design and document physical layouts for electrical substations, including foundations, grounding, conduit, switchgear assemblies, control buildings, and bus work.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering, OR a 4-year Engineering Technology degree, OR a 2-year technical degree with at least 5 years of related industry experience.
- Ability to produce accurate specifications and material requirements based on design drawings.
- Effective communication skills for coordinating with engineers and cross-functional teams.
- Attention to detail and commitment to safety, quality, schedule, and cost control in design work.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working with transmission and distribution electrical substations.
- Familiarity with FAC-008 compliance requirements and related standards.
- Knowledge of mechanical and CAD design principles in a utility or industrial environment.
- Experience supporting construction, field services, project management, and maintenance teams with design documentation.
- Experience using internal job transmittal or document control systems to manage drawing packages.
- Comfort with occasional site visits to verify field conditions and support project execution.
Work Environment
This is a full-time role in a professional engineering and utility-focused environment, providing drafting and design services for transmission and distribution substation projects. The position is based at a dedicated office facility in Forest Park, GA, with a standard work schedule of five 8-hour days or an optional four-9 hour days schedule, depending on business needs. Work is primarily performed in an office setting using AutoCAD and related engineering tools, with occasional travel to project sites for field verification and coordination. The environment emphasizes collaboration with engineering, construction, field services, project management, and maintenance teams, and supports a culture of safety, quality, and operational reliability. Typical office attire is expected, appropriate for a professional technical workplace and occasional site visits.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Forest Park, GA.
Pay And Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
