Subrogation Claims Specialist
Location: Hybrid schedule (3 days in office, 2 days remote) from any of the following locations: South Sioux City, NE; Boise, ID; Bloomington, IN; Knoxville, TN.
About the role
As an entry-level Subrogation Claims Specialist, you will play a critical role in recovering claim payments and uninsured losses by identifying and pursuing recovery opportunities against legally responsible third parties. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual interested in insurance, claims, legal processes, and negotiation to build a rewarding career in subrogation. The right candidate does not need extensive insurance or subrogation experience—we are looking for someone with the attitude, aptitude, curiosity, and drive to learn. Through training and hands-on experience, you will develop the technical knowledge and skills needed to investigate claims, evaluate liability and damages, communicate with stakeholders, and negotiate resolutions.
Responsibilities
- Review claim files, accident information, and other documentation to identify potential recovery opportunities.
- Learn how to investigate losses, gather facts, and identify information and evidence that may support recovery efforts.
- Develop an understanding of liability, damages, and the factors that influence recovery potential.
- Work with internal claims teams to gather information and move files toward resolution.
- Communicate professionally with insureds, agents, attorneys, insurance carriers, vendors, and other parties involved in the recovery process.
- Assist with preparing recovery demands and supporting documentation.
- Develop negotiation skills through training, coaching, and hands-on experience.
- Maintain accurate and thorough documentation while managing multiple files and priorities.
- Learn about insurance practices, claims processes, legal concepts, and subrogation principles through formal training and day-to-day experience.
Requirements
- Associate's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Experience in insurance, claims, customer service, legal support, collections, or a related professional environment is preferred.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable motor vehicle record.
- Ability and willingness to travel as needed.
Skills
- Strong Time Management: You can organize your day, manage deadlines, and keep multiple files and responsibilities moving forward without losing sight of important details.
- Prioritization: You can assess competing demands, determine what needs attention first, and adjust your priorities as circumstances change.
- Confidence on the Phone: You are comfortable speaking with people over the phone, asking questions, gathering information, and having professional conversations, even when they may be challenging.
- Self-Starter Mentality: You take ownership of your work and don’t wait to be told what to do next. When you encounter something unfamiliar, you take initiative to research, ask questions, and determine the appropriate next step.
- Decision-Making: You are comfortable evaluating information, using sound judgment, and making decisions. You understand that not every situation will have a clear-cut answer and are willing to make a recommendation based on the information available.
- Problem Solving & Critical Thinking: You enjoy investigating situations, connecting the dots, identifying missing information, and determining the best path forward.
- Coachability & Aptitude: You learn quickly, accept feedback, and apply what you've learned. You are curious about how things work and motivated to develop new skills.
- Attention to Detail: You understand that accuracy matters. You are thorough when reviewing information, documenting your work, and following through on commitments.
- Adaptability: You are comfortable learning new processes, handling changing priorities, and taking on increasing responsibility as your knowledge and experience grow.
