About the role

The Study Abroad Coordinator will serve as the main coordinator and liaison for the Solano campus, providing complex student study abroad advising and facilitating program development for faculty at both Solano and SLO campuses.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary campus coordinator for study abroad health, safety, and compliance, and oversee a suite of scholarships.
  • Coordinate and facilitate pre-departure/health and safety training for students for study away programs on both campuses.
  • Take the lead in specific study abroad program areas, providing general and program-specific study abroad advising, guiding faculty and staff through new program development, supporting marketing and outreach, risk management, orientations and re-entry, program assessment and event planning.
  • Assist in standardizing pre-departure orientations for faculty-led and departmental programs, working to ensure Cal Poly’s orientation and re-entry programming follows standards of good practice in international education to increase the intercultural competency and cultural humility of our students.
  • Perform complex Student Services professional work characterized by independent student advisement and guidance in individual and group settings, working actively and independently with Cal Poly faculty, staff, students, and campus offices.

Requirements

  • Utilizing thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior, possess an excellent ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student related matters.
  • Ability to independently and logically analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action while interpreting, communicating and applying policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions and make decisions while understanding implications to other program or service areas.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism, this includes the ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within diverse populations and backgrounds.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience.
  • A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
