Studio Technician, Fabrication Studios
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Studio Operations, this position supports the Fabrication Studios, CIA's school-wide fabrication facilities, and plays a key role in providing students, faculty, and staff with a safe, organized, and effective environment for learning and creative production.
About the role
Working closely with faculty and Studio Operations staff during the academic year, the Studio Technician supports the delivery of curriculum through the management of studio facilities, equipment, materials, supply stores, and specialized programs. The successful candidate will provide direct support to students utilizing the Fabrication Studios and serve as a technical resource for fabrication processes, materials, and equipment.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and organize studio spaces, tools, and equipment
- Conduct Foundation safety training for first-year students
- Facilitate demonstrations on fabrication processes, materials, and safe equipment operation
- Oversee environmental health and safety practices
- Assist with special departmental initiatives
- Support Federal Work-Study student employees as needed
- Contribute to projects involving studio improvements, archives management, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), HAZWOPER compliance, and other operational needs
Requirements
- BFA or BA in Art and Design, a bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent professional experience
- Broad working knowledge of fabrication processes, materials, and techniques
- Demonstrated commitment to safe studio practices
- Ability to work with students at varying skill levels and explain technical concepts clearly
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Familiarity with traditional and digital fabrication technologies, including laser cutters, CNC routers, and 3D printers
- Ability to troubleshoot equipment issues and perform basic maintenance and repairs
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud applications (Photoshop, Illustrator preferred)
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and collaborate effectively with faculty and staff
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance and stand/walk for the majority of the workday
Schedule
This is a full-time, non-exempt position that works during the academic year, from August through mid-May.
