Student Trainee (Information Technology)

This position is in the Cyber Excepted Service (CES) under 10 USC 1599f and does not convey eligibility for conversion to the Competitive Service. It is classified as a Technician/Administrative Support role at the Entry/Developmental level within the CES Occupational Structure.

About the role

The purpose of this position is to provide on-the-job experience and training through a formal program, preparing the incumbent for future roles in Information Technology.

Responsibilities

• Assists in troubleshooting accessibility and availability problems and initiates corrective actions.
• Ensures basic application of information security/information assurance policies, principles, and practices in the delivery of services.
• Performs a variety of limited technical tasks designed to familiarize the incumbent with regulatory guidelines, terminology, procedures, and techniques of Information Technology.

• Must be a U.S. Citizen.
• Must be at least 16 years of age.

Qualifications

Student Trainees qualify based on their educational achievements. To be eligible for the Student Internship Program, you must meet the following criteria:

• Submit unofficial/official transcripts showing current enrollment or acceptance for the current year (summer or fall semester).
• Provide a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50. The absence of this information will result in an ineligible rating.
• Required education must lead to a bachelor’s degree with specialization in or directly related to the field of training.

Qualification levels:

• GS-02: Completion of high school diploma or equivalent degree.
• GS-03: Completion of 1 full academic year of post-high school study.
• GS-04: Completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate’s degree.

Foreign Education: If using education completed in foreign colleges or universities, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services at the time of application.

Education

To be creditable, education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Only report attendance and/or degrees from accredited institutions.

Additional information

• Upon successful completion of academic and trainee program requirements, the student may be converted to a permanent position in the excepted service, consistent with agency needs, academic achievement, and demonstrated potential. Conversion potential for this opportunity is a GG-2210-5/7/9/11/12 up to the full performance level of GG-13.
• Selected applicants must maintain good academic standing, remain students as long as they are employed under the student program, perform their jobs successfully, and meet any other component-specific requirements outlined in their Participant Agreements.
• This position is in the Excepted Service and does not convey eligibility for conversion to the Competitive Service.
• Telework availability will be based on mission requirements and supervisory determination.
• Veterans’ Preference will be applied to preference-eligible candidates in accordance with Section 2108 of Title 5 U.S.C. and DoD Instruction 1400.25, Volume 3005.
