About the Program

The Upper Moreland School District encourages cooperation with colleges and universities in the training of student teachers and interns. The district accepts college students from accredited institutions for the following opportunities:

  • Pre-Student Teaching
  • Student Teaching
  • Fieldwork Experience
  • Internship
  • Practicum/Observation

Deadlines

  • April 1 for fall semester placement
  • November 1 for spring semester placement

Process & Required Documentation

The following steps outline the process for obtaining a placement:

Step 1: Initial Application

The student candidate must submit:

  • Letter from the college/university formally requesting the placement, including details such as dates, grade/subject, location, number of hours, and required activities
  • Résumé
  • Unofficial Transcript of Record

Step 2: Required Clearances & Forms

After initial contact from the Human Resources office, the student candidate must complete the following:

  • PA Criminal Record Check (Act 34)
  • Child Abuse Clearance (Act 151) – electronic or paper form
  • Federal Criminal Record Check (FBI fingerprinting) – use Service Code 1KG6XN
  • PA School Health Form (Physical & PPD) – tuberculosis test results must comply with Pennsylvania Department of Health requirements

All clearances must be dated within one (1) year of approval and must be for employment purposes.

Step 3: Application Completion

The student candidate must:

  • Provide personal information, including an email address
  • Select the type of placement: Student Teacher, Observations, or Intern
  • Select preferred schools for placement
  • Upload all required documents
  • Read and sign the disclaimer

Step 4: Screening Interview

After verifying paperwork and eligibility, the student candidate will be contacted for a screening interview with a District Supervisor or Principal.

Step 5: Placement Confirmation

If eligible and a placement is available, the office will confirm the specifics of the placement.

Assignment & Placement Process

  • Human Resources will communicate cleared applicants to the Director of Education.
  • Student teachers/interns will be assigned by the building principal/designee in consultation with and approval by the Director of Education, using the volunteer teacher list of teachers with Instructional II certification.
  • The Supervisor of Special Education and Pupil Services will assign pupil services specialist interns.
  • Student teachers will only be assigned to experienced staff members (Level II certification).
  • The responsible administrator will inform the Director of Human Resources, in writing, of finalized student-teacher assignments.
  • Prior to the commencement of the student teaching experience, the college/university must provide a written explanation of program expectations to the cooperating professional and clarify the frequency of visits from the college/university supervisor.

Field experience/observations are discouraged during the last two weeks of the school year.
