Student Professional Nurse - IMU / Step Down

About the role

The Student Professional Nurse (SPN) position is part of the Methodist Advancement into Professional Practice (MAPP) program at Houston Methodist West Hospital. This program provides students with opportunities to gain clinical competency and confidence as they transition from student role to new graduate nurse.

Responsibilities

• Administer nursing care under the direction of a Registered Nurse
• Carry out delegated tasks for age-specific populations as outlined in the unit's scope of service
• Demonstrate appropriate communication skills and interpersonal relationships
• Practice Patient Family Centered Care aligned with Houston Methodist's ICARE values: Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent
• Enrolled in a school of nursing program with a minimum 3.2 GPA
• Required BLS (Basic Life Support) or AHA (American Heart Association) certification

Skills and Abilities

• Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English
• Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers
• Sufficient proficiency in performing basic patient care activities of daily living within unit-specific limits
• Ability to communicate patient problems/needs and nursing interventions to the Registered Nurse
• Ability to reinforce health care information/teaching provided by the Registered Nurse
• Ability to respond to the call light system and manage multiple ongoing priorities

Essential Functions

• Facilitates teamwork and contributes to the work effort as a whole
• Communicates with the interprofessional health care team, including participating in nursing care conferences and discharge planning
• Delivers care in a kind, courteous, and honest manner
• Reports patient problems/needs and nursing interventions to the Registered Nurse
• Ensures patient needs are met by rounding and managing multiple priorities
• Supports initiatives to prevent conditions such as pressure ulcers, patient falls, and hospital-acquired infections
• Contributes to identification of corrective action and improvement activities impacting quality and safety targets on the unit-based scorecard
