(Student Position) Afterschool Group Leader (K-5th Grade) - YMCA

Off-campus position at the YMCA.

About the role

Under the guidance of the After-School Program Coordinator, the After-School Group Leader provides direction for the program and classroom and implements program reading and interactive curriculum/activities. The After-School Group Leader also provides quality experience to children and parents that focus on the YMCA values of honesty, respect, responsibility and caring.

Responsibilities

• Implement curriculum within the established guidelines.
• Design and implement daily lesson/activity plans.
• Supervise the children, classroom and all activities in a safe environment.
• Conduct reading and literacy activities with school-aged children in small groups.
• Make ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child.
• Maintain positive relationships and effective communication with parents.
• Maintain program site and equipment.
• Maintain required program records.
• Participate in family nights, program activities, staff meetings, and staff training.

Requirements

• Good conduct and academic standing with Sheridan College.
• Currently enrolled as a Sheridan College student.
• Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater.
• Must qualify for Federal Work Study to be considered for employment.
• CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
• Mission with Character, Listen 1st, and Child Abuse Prevention training within 6 months of hire date.

Skills

• Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting preferred.
• Ability to plan, organize, and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
• Previous experience with diverse populations.
• Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
• Ability to plan, lead, and participate in activities.

Working Conditions

• Ability to engage and interact with kids, parents, and staff in a positive way.
• Maintain a safe, friendly environment with the ability to lift, stand, sit, and move with the kids.

Pay

$14.00/hour

Tentatively 3-4 positions available. Flexible hours, based on class schedule. Desired start date: 08/25/2026.
